House votes to revamp Endangered Species Act

http://www.knoxstudio.com/shns/story.cfm?pk=ENDANGERED-09-29-05&cat=WW

By JAMES W. BROSNAN
Scripps Howard News Service
September 29, 2005

WASHINGTON - Property owners would gain the upper hand over the Silvery Minnow, the Mexican Spotted Owl and other rare wildlife under a major revision of the 32-year-old Endangered Species Act that cleared the House Thursday.

The House voted 222-193 to weaken the government's power to force landowners to protect endangered species. Under the bill the government could no longer order property owners and local governments to protect critical habitat for the plants and wildlife. But the government could develop recovery plans for species and would have to pay landowners who participate.

The Congressional Budget Office said the measure could nearly double the annual cost of enforcing the act, to more than $600 million a year, because of the payments to landowners. The White House Office of Management and Budget said President Bush supports the reforms, but expressed reservations about the "significant budgetary impact."

The measure would become the first major revision to the Endangered Species Act and marks a victory a major victory for ranchers, farmers, developers and miners over conservation groups. But its fate in the Senate is unclear.

21. No, it doesn't...
From some of the articles I have read on this, it doesn't look good in the senate. Hopefully, there are enough sane repugs, and non whore democrats to defeat this. Is this more fiscally conservative legislation (cough???

Kevin.

24. Gah!
Even though I should know better, I always think of the Sentate as more level headed and sane than the House, and less insanely partisan.

I think Boxer is safe here in California, but I should probably start writing to Feinstooge.

4. It's over for the US
This is just another way of opening the public treasury to looters. It seems there's a creepy eagerness in D.C. to hasten the demise of our country.

9. I think that they know something we don't...
like maybe there's a killer asteroid bearing down, or maybe the climate is about to go totally ka-blooey a lot quicker than anyone thought...or maybe poppy has secretly informed congress of the arrival date of the mothership, along with the transports to begin taking humans to work the mines.

28. They do not want the demise of our country...they want to remake it
They want a country where 5 percent control more or less all resources and the other 95 percent of Americans are serfs or peasants who are credit slaves. Control of the 95% through media, religion, government and nationalism.

5. this one I will NOT forgive! . . .
Democratic senators damn well better work to kill this thing, and kill it good . . . even if it means filibustering, or walking out and bringing the Senate to a standstill . . . if the Senate lets this pass, I'm through with politics . . . I'll just retreat to my own little world and live out my life as comfortably as possible while they destroy the planet . . . and just hope the destruction isn't complete before my own time comes . . .

32. It was rural Dems
For the most part. There were a few courageous souls, like Moore from Kansas and Chandler from Kentucky; and the NC & SC contingent. I don't know what we're going to do with these rural Dems if they can't even stand up for the Endangered Species Act. But it proves that it's wrong to say DLC Dems are the source of all the problems in the party, it's just not true.

6. The Endanger Species Act
Seems to be set up this way: If you are a wealthy land owner you can trash all the creature relatives on your land, and then apply to BushCo for MegaBucks to "restore" the species.

You gotta admit, it's slick and slimey. As the Republicans usually are

35. Trust me, it's more than want.
He spoke at our convocation last week (which I had to attend for class) and our school president kept calling him Senator. Not that I wouldn't be happy to have him as a senator (first for my race, and he couldn't do worse than Frist or Alexander), but damn it, I really want to be able to be happy with my congresspeople for once in my life. And yes, he is my representative.

26. Thanks for the link.
I am appalled to admit that my representative, Jim Marshall (GA 3rd), a DINO, voted for this travesty. He'll be hearing from me, I assure you. I live in an increasingly liberal district, and Mr. Marshall needs to be reminded that he can be replaced with a real Democrat if enough of us pay attention to his antics.

:puke:

Dems. in the Senate must filibuster if this bill is not poison-pilled before it comes to the floor.

if so, I hope DU gets on board to stop yet another giveaway to corporate interests at the cost of our future.

Biodiversity IS a human rights issue! Climate change (due to the destruction of ecosystems) is also a human rights issue!!

30. The "Clear Species Act"?
They simply cannot stop stealing our money. EVERYTHING they propose is a transfer of wealth from the government to cronies.

And yes, I also suspect that the upper levels of the Busheviks desire the destruction of Old America into a state not unlike the Soviet Union, where a Party Elite (and theior rich cronies) control the bottom 98% by all-lies-all-the-time.

Else why would they have constructed the Greatest Propaganda Machine in all of human history?
