FCC Releases Orders for Internet Backdoor Wiretap Access
Sept 29 - Quietly last week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a 59-page document outlining new rules forcing broadband internet and voice-over-IP (VoIP) phone service providers to open up their systems to federal, state and local law enforcement officials.

In releasing the rules, the FCC opened up a 30-day public comment period. The regulations, which are planned for implementation in 2007, were decided upon in the beginning of August and made public Friday without a news release or other announcement.

Opponents of the proposed rules argue that the "backdoor" requirements pose the opportunity for privacy rights violations and will be prohibitively expensive for companies and the consumers they will ultimately pass the cost along to. In addition, Internet phone companies allege that the FCC rules are designed to prop up faltering traditional telephone companies, which are losing ground in competition with the relatively versatile and inexpensive VoIP services.

1. Recommending...
This is a very scary ruling. We need to oppose this as much as we can. In fact, I'd recommend the opposition effort for a DU activist assignment.

dissent - tap in and locate the people who speak too much truth.

This is horrible. MUST BE OPPOSED.

9. Yes, But to Everyone You Call?
and that's an interesting comment on propping up local phone companies. The descendents of the Bell System have always opposed wiretaps and giving customer data to the government.

14. Ya Know, with so much information out there, and the "public has the
right to know" laws, all we have to do is go on the internet to see what they are up to.Seriously, punch in anything and you can find it.I'm talking government stuff. We have a right to know about all these laws.

17. My kinda new fancy cell phone fell apart and
I had a hardly used replacement phone from the same co. that I asked to have activated. They said NO they couldn't because it didn't have GPS FEATURE ON IT! As I understand, if you punch in 911, emergency services can locate you within ten feet. :yoiks:

24. that's correct all cells now have the gps-based locating capability

Actually I think it's the cell towers that have the GPS receivers and they triangulate your phones location from your signal strength, I don't think it's precise as 10 feet though.

I should look into that more sometime...

18. Use open source software.
No back doors, *ever*.

And if there were back doors, you'd know about it.

Stop the piracy of corporate ownership of intellectual property. Support open technology and open source software.

22. why do we hate our freedoms? 10bucks someone breaks into this in a week
then anyone will be able to listen in on anyone else through the 'secret' backdoor. If they want to tap someone, why don't they just put a mico-mic into the house? any number of better ways to go about it than this

25. Just in time for the 2008 elections.
"In releasing the rules, the FCC opened up a 30-day public comment period. The regulations, which are planned for implementation in 2007, were decided upon in the beginning of August and made public Friday without a news release or other announcement."

They already own the vote counting machines through Diebold, they own or have the genitalia of the corpwhorate owned MSM in their back pockets and now they want to control the only avenue of free speech for the American People. Have they no shame? I'll answer that Hell No!!

P.S. Do not expect the corpwhorate owned MSM to cover this in any meaningful way, this is what they have dreamed of.

Choco-rations will probably be increased 1 mg. per citizen-consumer unit in the future, if the Permanent tax-cut for the Rich is approved.

So rejoice, and be exceedingly glad.

We have always been at war with TERRA !

Big BushCo loves you.

28. Faltering traditional phone companies, that is the key phrase in this
article. My wife and I canceled our land line last year. No more service fees, we use our cell phones and nothing else. The Bell's are losing money like crazy to cell phone companies. I am pretty sure they had a lobbyist pay somebody off to try and get this pushed through.
