13 U.S. Troops Die In Latest Iraq Violence

BAGHDAD -- Five days of nearly non-stop bombings in Iraq have killed at least 194 people. The dead include 13 U.S. service members.

Militants behind the attacks have vowed to wreck the Oct. 15 vote on a constitution.

Lately, they've been targeting vegetable markets in mostly Shiite towns north and south of Baghdad. Friday's car bombing of a market in Hillah killed nine people.

At least 99 died in attacks Thursday night in the city of Balad north of Baghdad. A witness at a market said he saw "vegetables and human flesh flying through the air." Insurgents hit a police checkpoint with six mortar rounds at about the same time.

Florida Air Force casualty reported in Iraq

Washington, D.C. -- Another Florida woman serving in the war in Iraq has been killed in the line of service.

The Department of Defense says 21-year-old Airman 1st Class Elizabeth Jacobson was killed in Iraq when an explosive device exploded near her convoy vehicle on Wednesday.

Jacobson was from Riviera Beach and served out of Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas.

South Fla. Woman Killed By Roadside Bomb In Iraq

POSTED: 6:35 am EDT September 30, 2005

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. -- Air Force Airman 1st Class Elizabeth N. Jacobson had her life planned for when she returned to Florida from Iraq, including a career in law enforcement and two sons she someday wanted to have.

In an e-mail to friends and family, she wrote, "I want to die happy, and have a productive life. I hope nobody wishes I was never born. I hope my kids never tell me they wish I were like their friend's mom. I hope that I make money, but don't end up a workaholic or stuck up."
>snip<

"She loved what she was doing and she loved to be able to say that people should give her respect because without her and those like her we wouldn't be free. She stood up for her beliefs and made everyone around her be aware of them," said her grandmother, Sondra Millman-Cosimano of Riviera Beach.

Jacobson attended Palm Beach Gardens and Gold Coast high schools while living with her grandparents in Florida. She left to live with her mother in Madera, Calif., but later returned to Riviera Beach looking for work.

Her grandfather advised her to join the armed services, Millman-Cosimano said.<

propoganda to me.

They went to a war on Iraq based on lies..and opened up massive terrorist recruiment centers. How does that keep us free?

Thank the Visual media on that. They don't have the balls to show whats going on (like reporting during Vietnam war).

9. Well, the IRR is being called up ! Yeeehah.
I'm 47 and recently got my orders. Left active duty in 1995. I report to Fort Bragg in January. Everybody in the IRR should be prepared to get called up into Bush's Folly. Maybe we can put together the new improved "Home Guard." No flak jackets needed - just give us a bazooka and point us towards the commies!!

I would gladly go back if the Nation truly needed me. But to be called back for Bush's war profiteering is painful.

Where are all the brave tough-talking freepers??? I figured they would be the first ones to sign up for combat duty

WHERE ARE KRISTINN AND ALL THE TOUGH FREEPERS WHEN THEIR NATION NEEDS THEM??

16. This is reprehensible
Tabasco, I only know you by reading your DU posts. I have no doubt whatsoever that you, like thousands of other veterans, would have been engaged in battle already, IF Iraq or any other country had invaded us, or IF our country were truly in danger. We all know, though, that Bush's illegal invasion of Iraq was never necessary, is only hurting American, and is making the threat of us being attacked much, much greater.

It makes me seethe with anger to think that the arrogant twit can so casually disrupt thousands of lives, just to satisfy his own sociopathic desires. We are destroying Iraq, killing thousands of innocent civilians, causing them extreme misery, and all for nothing. You, and thousands of others, are being put in harm's way. Members of the IRR have lives, families, homes, and are being ordered to just leave all of it, because of the vile policies of PNAC.

Let the smug, self righteous Young Republicans serve, if this is truly a worthwhile war. Instead of trying to cause misery here, by gutting all social safety nets, let them go through boot camp, and follow their Crawford Coward to battle. Let the country club conservatives encourage THEIR precious sons and daughters to join in the war they support by slapping yellow ribbons on their SUVs and BMWs.

You, Tabasco, are needed here, in this country, to help the rest of us fight the fundies, the neocons, the greedy corporate millionaires, the others who are destroying our middle class and making day by day life for the poor a living hell. If this war is so noble, so necessary, let the ones who feel that they are so much better than us go fight it, while we fight to restore America to what it should be. Stay safe, and come back unharmed.

Speak a language real well? Know a country from living there? Have a specialty useful to these bloodthirsty bastards? Live on tenterhooks....

They've called up medical personnel pushing seventy to backfill here in the states...no kidding.

Could you please explain how IRR is supposed to work? I'm sorry I don't know alot about the military, but I want to learn. Is this war the first time the IRR has been tapped?

Thanks- OB

32. The IRR is the Individual Ready Reserves
You don't have to do anything or belong to a unit. The only requirements are taking a physical every five years and filling out paperwork when they tell you to.

Many people who leave active duty remain in the IRR for a variety of reasons. I took an early retirement which required me to remain in the IRR.

I believe part of the IRR was called up during the first Gulf War.

The IRR is the last pool of people the military can call on. After the IRR the only option to get more people involuntarily is a draft.

15. 99 killed in attacks.
99 Red Balloons

You and I in a little toy shop
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got
Set them free at the break of dawn
'till one by one they were gone
Back at base, sparks in the software
Flash the message "something's out there"
Floating in the summer sky
Ninety nine red balloons go by

Ninety nine red balloons
Floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, it's red alert
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
And focusing it on the sky
The ninety nine red balloons go by

Ninety nine decisions treat
Ninety nine ministers meet
To worry, worry, super scurry
Call the troops out in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys, this is war
The President is on the line
As Ninety nine red balloons go by

Ninety nine knights of the air
Ride super high-tech jet fighters
Everyone's a super hero
Everyone's a Captain Kirk
With orders to identify
To clarify and classify
Scramble in the summer sky
Ninety nine red balloons go by

As ninety nine red balloons go by

Ninety nine dreams I have had
In every one a red balloon
It's all over and I'm standing pretty
In this dust that was a city
If i could find a souvenir
Just to prove the world was here
And here is a red balloon
I think of you and let it go

18. How many names do we want on the Iraq War Memorial?
Each day we remain in Iraq is another set of names that we have to put on one of the panels of a future Iraq War Memorial.

We must withdraw from Iraq immediately and unconditionally!
