Peace mom Cindy Sheehan meets with Elizabeth Dole over Iraq war

(AP) September 30, 2005 - It's no surprise that North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole and anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan don't see eye-to-eye on the war in Iraq.

...

Dole's office issued a statement saying statements made by Sheehan and her political organization undermine the war on terror and are detrimental to the military. Dole is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Sheehan was more direct. She called Dole "a gentle lady" and a "warmonger," the latter a term she used to describe Arizona Senator John McCain after meeting with him on Wednesday.

Sheehan's conference with Dole was one of several scheduled this week as part of her campaign to persuade members of Congress to explain the reasons for the war. She spoke before a massive anti-war rally Saturday on the National Mall and was arrested Monday demonstrating in front of the White House.

2. I'm all for Sheehan but.
if her attempt is to persuade people, the two she's met she's labeled as warmongers. That might not help in persuading them.

However, her characterization is right on the money. If McCain and Dole were on the other end of this war, or if they were foreign parlamentarians, they'd be incensed if another country was either abusing them or abusing another country. Power corrupts absolutely.

3. she is calling it exactly as it is
unfortunately, we will pay the same price or worse as we paid in Viet Nam, because of the stupidity of the people in high places, and the stupidity of the people that put them there

5. Cindy Sheehan has received her politico education the hard way.
Through the death of her son Casey and the need to ask those questions "why," it has lead Cindy on a path where she has been able to meet thousands who demand the same answers. She and they have learned from one another. She has become a student of the veterans who have actually been in the battle and have seen, heard, smelled, felt the horrors and lies of war. She has become a student of the politico, who has discussed with her the actions of our Houses of Government. She is a Gold Star Mother who does not demand that her fellow Mother's respond in her manner. She has wept and prayed with those that have also lost a loved one. Cindy has learned the hard way......through actual experience.

Cindy has learned who gives false sympathy and false responses.
Sen John McCain, who would not stand to defend his own family against the attacks of the Bush machine. Cindy is smart enough to comprehend that an Elizabeth Dole, who has no children to lose and has only been seen with her step-daughter during critical campaigns, is in fact a political hack who has used her Southern charm and abilities for her personal political advancement and cares little of others unable to affect her life.

Cindy has learned well and her son Casey is extremely proud of her along with millions of her fellow Americans.

4. They ARE warmongers, and McCain should know better
I used to have alot of respect for him... very little now. And Dole? I lived in NC for 17 years, and my family still lives there.... she sucks as a Senator, and hadn't lived in NC since college. Some twerp at her office hung up on my Mom not that long ago.....

And, IMO, Sheenhan lost a son to the war, so I have no judgments on anything she says. Lying warmongers killed her son as surely as if they had put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

McCain: shame!

6. Exactly - I live in NC , I did NOT vote for Liddy Dole...
but I've called her office numerous times to give her my opinion. She is a lousy Senator, and she doesn't work for us, she works for this * administration and the GOP. A lot of those kids in Iraq are supposed to be her constituents, although apparently she doesn't care about keeping them.
I used to think mcCain was ok too, but after he sold out to * that was it. It showed a lack of integrity and principles that can't be excused.

Cindy has every right to call them what she wants. I think I'll have to give Liddy another call - I didn't know about this til this post.

Thanks!

8. Liddy=Useless
I live in Raleigh. The only thing good I can say about Burr is that his office does respond to inquiries and comments. Liddy doesn't even bother to do that much.

9. Persuade them to do what?
I don't follow the logic of "don't say what the problem is, just expect them to get it because you're nice."
