India's Economy Up 8.1 Percent in Quarter

NEW DELHI - India's economy grew a robust 8.1 percent in the April-June quarter from a year ago, lifted by strong manufacturing as well as services such as banking and tourism, the government said Friday.

I'll believe it when I see it: falling unemployment, rising median income, and increasing tax revenues, fewer business failures, bankruptcies, and smiles on faces in the streets.

5. 3.4% is decent for our economy.

It is about our long term average. You will struggle to find an economy at a similar point of development growing our rate. However, it must be noted that this growth rate has only been accomplished in a period of record deficits and very low interest rates that should be producing growth north of 6%, but we're not getting that.

If India and China are going to increase their energy use by 8-10 % a year and there are four Indians and four Chinese for every American then the world is going to run out of fossil-based energy at any cost pretty soon.

13. I don't think fluency is the issue, rather accent and phrasing

Please remember that English is one of the two official national languages of India (the other is Hindi). According to wikipedia, English is spoken by somewhere between 50 and 250 million Indians in India. The educated Indians in call centers have likely been speaking English since they started attending school, albeit as a second or third language.

Indeed, about a third of the population in India has the ability to carry on a conversation in English — more than the combined populations of Britain and the United States.

With growth in Q2 and Q3 last year being even lower, at 6.7 per cent and 6.4 per cent respectively, the base effect should be enough to enable the economy to comfortably achieve this year’s 7 per cent target.

In fact, given the much greater degree of comfort in agriculture this year, all the signs point to substantially higher growth this year.

That depends, however, on whether the momentum in several sectors will be sustained. While overall GDP growth in Q1 has been the highest in a year, manufacturing growth in Q1 is at a multi-year high, growth in construction is highest since the second quarter of FY04, growth in trade, hotels, transport is the highest since the third quarter of FY 04, and financing, insurance, real estate and business services have grown the fastest since the second quarter of FY03.

If agriculture does as well as it was expected to, there’s no reason why the record growth in these sectors will not continue.
