Rice says Iraq must not be given up to 'merciless killers'

Associated Press

PRINCETON, N.J. - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Friday the United States must not abandon its mission in Iraq and Americans must realize the consequences of ceding the country to an enemy she called savage.

Rice also told students at Princeton University that the Bush administration's focus on the spread of democracy in the Middle East is both a moral obligation and a tough-minded response to global terrorism.

"From Cairo and Ramallah to Beirut and Baghdad, they are now finding new spaces of freedom," Rice said. advertisement

On Iraq, Rice took the unusual step of noting the number of U.S. troops killed during the war - nearly 2,000.
"The nation will always honor their names and their sacrifices," Rice said.

1. What might the consequences of ceding the country be?
Hmmmm. Civil War where everyday tens and hundreds and innocent people are being killed? The creation of new and emboldened terrorists? Increased hatred toward America?

No, can't let that happen.

Although I've never seen any evidence of it, she's supposed to be so brilliant and all, you'd think she'd jump at the chance to exercise that briliant mind of hers with the brainy Princeton protesters as a relief, if nothing else, from her dull, stupid, dim boss and sometime "husband" George Bush.

13. Way too late.
The Bushists still have to pretend Iraq is turning into a peaceful Western democracy... so long as we don't lost our will and resolve.

As anyone who is following events knows, that is complete bullshit, and the only question is when does the civil war start, sooner, or later?

23. There are more than two options, Condi.
Us being there, or ceding the country to terrorists aren't the only choices. An actual DIPLOMAT would be working on other scenarios to present to an actual LEADER who could contemplate more than one thing at a time.

But then, you are really only the head of the propaganda department, and your contract does not include consideration of any ideas other than those handed to you by Dick Cheney.

Perhaps someone can explain to Rice the difference between tough minded and pig headed.

And "new spaces of freedom" is GOP speak for the fact that the coalition forces don't control a single village or town in their entirety. Yeah, there's a 20 foot stretch on the road between Baghdad and the airport that hasn't been the site of an IED ----yet.

39. The only plausible justification
that the neocons have left for staying in Iraq is that things will get worse if we leave (danger, terror, boogiemen, land sharks, mushroom clouds, etc).

But it's the overall net-effect on our national interests that matters, and I see a big net-plus from withdrawing. (It's also possible that once they realize that they're on their own militarily, the Iraqis will do things differently -- or not.) Moreover, I see the downside risk becoming greater the longer we stay, not less.

Of course, the neocons would (and will) claim something different. And as long as people don't hold the neocons responsible for the failures brought on by their deceptions and delusions -- and judge neocon rhetoric based on its track record of failures, as opposed to falling repeatedly for the spin-of-the-moment (often full of intangible assertions or assertions (like assertions about the future) that can't be disproven with the facts available to skeptics) -- then this country will never solve its problems, and we will remain headed for disaster.

40. Since it rightfully belongs to the Kompassionate Killers
I weep for you," the Walrus said:
"I deeply sympathize."
With sobs and tears he sorted out
Those of the largest size,
Holding his pocket-handkerchiefs
Before his streaming eyes.

"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?"
But answer came there none—
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.
