Iraqi resistance peaks as Wolfowitz arrives
http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/649B6B42-5083-4B1D-A2E8-46512E80E7AD.htm

<snip>
Paul Wolfowitz has made a secret trip to Iraq coinciding with one of the most violent days since the occupation began.

Three US soldiers were killed in resistance attacks and two Iraqis were shot dead by occupation troops. In all around 20 US troops were injured in attacks as the Deputy Defence Secretary Wolfowitz arrived in the capital Baghdad on Friday.

A US occupation official in Baghdad on condition of anonymity said on Friday Wolfowitz was on a four-day visit. No further details were available as his visit was kept under tight wraps by the Pentagon.

In Washington, the defence department said Wolfowitz would be holding meetings with US commanders and Iraqi officials. This is his second visit since the US occupied Iraq in April this year.

...saw this on yahoo too but I like this headline better.

1. Hi Leftchick! I couldn't resist, so I rewrote the lead-in that you provide
as it would have been written, had it come from 'merkin media. Hope you enjoy it!

"Paul Wolfowitz has made a secret trip to Iraq coinciding with the most protracted lull in the idyllic peace since the liberation began.

Three US peacekeepers were killed in terrorist attacks and 20 Iraqis were shot dead by American peacekeepers. In all 2 additional US troops were injured in attacks as the Deputy Defence Secretary Wolfowitz arrived in the capital Pleasantville on Friday.

A US peacekeeping official in Baghdad on condition of anonymity said on Friday Wolfowitz was on a four-day visit to spread mirth and joy. No further details were available as his visit was supposed to be kept under tight wraps in order to protect him from being crushed by Iraqis wanting to hug him.

In Washington, the defence department said Wolfowitz would be holding meetings with US commanders and Iraqi officials to negotiate an end to the use of palm fronds on the roads used by American diplomats and peacekeepers. Said Wolfowitz of the Iraqis, “Enough is enough, it is no longer necessary to line the roads and streets with these palm fronds when we are expected; it is a nice gesture, but there are so many displays of Iraqi gratitude that we need to preserve these trees.” This is his second visit since the US liberated Iraq in April this year.

6. Breaking News! re the story Miki just file
According to administration officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that those weren't really terrorist attacks. It was only a fight that broke out among a group Iraqi citizens wanting to be the first to kneel down and kiss the feet of their favorite liberator, Wolfwhistleass. Mr. Wolfwhistleass was unhurt in the scuffle, and deeply regrets the loss of life of any of his grateful admirers.

7. What are you wishing for? that Wolfie will grow a set of balls,
resign his Pentagon post and enlist in the military and actually SERVE HIS COUNTRY to undo his cowardly chickenhawk views?

Are you wishing the Blue Fairy will grant him a working conscience?

That he will dissolve his war profiterring companies and donate the illegal profits to charity?

He will ACTUALLY find Jesus and ask for forgiveness for being responsible for the murder of tens of thousands of human beings?

4. The only thing secret of course
was the location of Mr. Wolfowitz. Had he wanted to spare our troops these bloody attacks he could have kept it completely secret or even better- let the field commanders come to him and get some respite from
constant danger.

He has been a disruptive failure everywhere he has gone, one of the more justly hated men in the world.

5. the word "peaks" is quite misleading
it would infer that the attacks will subsequently diminish - does someone have a crystal ball here?

perhaps "ramp up" would be a better description.
