WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two U.S. senators on Friday said the Army was housing some 650 sick and injured National Guard and Reserves personnel in unacceptable conditions at Ft. Stewart, Ga., while they were being evaluated to return to active duty.
Republican Christopher Bond of Missouri and Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont, co-chairs of the Senate's National Guard Caucus, said in a report the soldiers who either had served in Iraq (news - web sites) or on their way there were not getting proper medical care or evaluation.
The report, that stemmed from an investigation by the senators' staffs, also said the barracks designed for healthy soldiers on annual training were not suitable for ill or injured soldiers.
The worst barracks, it said, were "1950s style, concrete-foundation barracks with no air-conditioning or insulation and detached toilets and shower facilities."
