Cuba Welcomes U.S. Senate Vote on Travel

Fri, Oct. 24, 2003
Associated Press

HAVANA - Cuba's foreign minister welcomed the U.S. Senate's vote this week to ease restrictions on American travel here, but said he doubted President Bush would sign it.

"It is another sign that both houses of Congress favor a political change toward Cuba," Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque told reporters.

But Perez Roque predicted that Bush would veto the measure, as the White House has indicated.

... President Kennedy imposed the travel ban in 1963, a year after the Cuban missile crisis. President Carter let it lapse in 1977, but it was reimposed by President Reagan in 1982. Violators could face criminal penalties of up to $250,000 and 10 years in prison.

3. Why not Cuba, indeed...
Because Cuba threatens the very premise of the structure the USA wants to impose on the western hemisphere.

I've thought about this a lot. There's just no reason whatsoever for the USA to have acted as hostilely towards this island nation for over 40 years, except that the Cuban revolution represented a grave danger to the ideology of corporate supremacy enforced by US military might. Even in peace, the knowledge that Castro's communism could actually work in the long run is a dagger pointed squarely at the throat of imperialism and greed.

While our country is still exporting violence to the world, the Castro regime is exporting doctors. That is why Cuba is a thousand times more dangerous to USA hegemony than China ever could be.

4. Actually it's Miami Batistianos That Want to keep Americans out of Cuba!
They spend millions of dollars lobbying Washington to keep the embargo and travel ban in place. They threaten to withhold about a million votes from Republicans if embargo is ended. They contribute campaign funds to pandering Democrat politicians like Graham and Nelson.

Meanwhile, they board planes in Miami and fly directly to Havana! They can spend as much as they wish, staying in hotels, renting cars, going to shows and restaurants, etc. Their plan is to keep Americans out of Cuba, and then when the object of their hatred dies, they think they can take over Cuba.

Miami "exiles" spread propaganda about Cuba to make Americans not want to go there. For them, the embargo and travel ban has been a success!

2. Good For the Republican Senators Who Voted Against The Ban, But...
Good for the Republican senators who voted against enforcing the travel ban for non-Cuban American citizens wishing to visit Cuba. I still don't think it's enough to make me want to vote for them, though.
