Democrats make deal with Schwarzenegger to reject most of Davis' Appointme
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2003/10/25/state0807EDT0023.DTL

Arnold Schwarzenegger will reject most of Gov. Gray Davis' last-minute appointments but allow 17 of them to stand when he takes office next month, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

<snip>

In the last days of his administration, Davis named 12 members of his staff to jobs with salaries that range from $86,196 a year to $117,396. He also named 77 other people to unpaid positions on various state boards and commissions.

The fate of those appointments was thrown into doubt Friday when state Senate President Pro Tem John Burton said he would not call a special legislative session to confirm them before Davis, a fellow Democrat, leaves office. If they are still unconfirmed by the Senate when Schwarzenegger takes over, he could simply withdraw them.

Instead, the Times reported, Burton hammered out a deal in which the Republican Schwarzenegger will withdraw the names of 77 appointees but will let 17 others stand. The 17 will be a mixture of both paid and unpaid appointments.

1. already the democrats are playing footsie with Arnold
Can't they just stand for something for a change? In my opinion they should have apporoved all of Davis' appointees and said to Arnold, "Too bad". Hard line I know, but Arnold that's politics. It seems to me they are going to go out of their way to "accomodate" just like democrats always do.

They should remember that more than 53% of the people in the state voted against Arnold.

15. Arnold is Pete Wilson's trained Puppy
Arnold won't pee unless Massa Pete tells him to.

And these Pink Tutu Democrats (Lockeyer, Shelley, Weston, Burton, Willie Brown) ALL lay down and die for him.

Who will stand up to the Nazis? What brave Patriot will get recalls going against these traitors?

17. When are the dumb Dems going to stop helping the enemy!
The republican pigs NEVER negotiate; they steal or harrass until they get want they want. We must treat them the way they treat us. Californians should write to those congress people and tell them to stop wetting their pants at the sight of that big ugly nazi.

26. Democrat ('de-m&-"krat): see synonym at "collaborator"
After they surrendered the 77 names, you've just got to admire how they wouldn't be pushed around on those other 17.

That'll show Arnold!

34. Perhaps these are people that Davis wanted but the legislators did not.
It may not be a correct assumption that everything that Davis wants is also what the Democrats in the legislature wants.

33. The Democrats have to play footsie with Arnold
Whether anyone likes it or not -- and believe me, I don't -- Arnold recieved the support of more voters (48%) than rejected the Recall(45%). Any serious talk of a revenge recall was dropped the day following the vote.

The Recall may not have been a grassroots movelment, but the voters went along with it. In about two weeks, Schwarzenegger will be the governor and we'll have to deal with him.

As things are on DU, I will issue the disclaimer that accepting the fact he is governor in no way means I have any confidence in this gorilla to solve problems or that he isn't the stooge of the energy pirates. This deal concerns appointments, many of them minor. The Democrats, we would hope, are devising a strategy to prevent any sweetheart settlement with the pirates or reintroduction of energy deregulation.

I'm sure there's plenty of room in G.O.P. for ya.... or at perhaps in the Republican wing of Democratic Party. Zel Miller is there waiting for ya.

Dennis Kucinich and Cynthia McKinney are two of the few Democratic leaders with the cojones to stand up and speak the truth on Bush & Co.

Do some homework on their opposition to the Iraq invasion *before* the war.

32. And apperently not many in the party admire them.
McKinney lost the primary for renomination for her House seat and Kucinich is dead last in virtually every poll. If Democrats admire these people, they have a funny way of showing it.

4. Apparently many Democrats still believe in "accomodation."
They believe in "moving on" and aspire to be nothing but deal brokers, brokering deals with Republicans which, in the end, hand the Republicans what they wanted anyway.

They believe Republicans are eager to work with "constructive" Democrats in a "bipartisan" framework.

They don't dare acknowledge to themselves the simple fact that there's been a coup in America, and it's still under way.

They think it's politics as usual. But it's a new, bloody day in America.

Brokering with the repukes gets us to where we are today!! Someone has counted where the Dems use to be on the line from left to centrist to right and how far we've moved to the right due to this 'brokering'.

IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE IN THIS GOVERNMENT AND NOT JUST HOW IS HOLDING THAT POSITION!!

It tends to undercut the various dire warnings during the campaign. Why in the world is there such readiness to work with this Republican puppet who got there through the misuse of recall?

13. 3 or 4 at least!
I tend to wonder here, though, whwether or not we can simply expect the Dems to do absolutely nothing for AHH-nold. All Cali. news media are watching Condom-face, so the antics of the Dems will be center stage for the inevitable discusiion of why the Democrats are obstructing poor AHH-nie. They have to do business with him.

I wouldn't worry too much. Burton will put a whammy on Schwarzenegger when he can.

18. Ya know, Democrats and Republicans are just the perfect match
They're domineering sadists, and we're self-indulgent victims. It's perfect. We just want to smooth it over and hope it gets better, and they just want to take and take and take and scream bloody murder at any impediments and take some more.

We are ridiculous.

Clinton thought that by bringing things back toward the middle and appeasing the right that they'd be more decent, and they rewarded him by impeachment, constant legal action and vigilant vilification. Are we going to learn anything?

20. I have not found which appointments they are as neither the Times nor
SFGate emntions them, but I DO have a great deal of trust for Burton who is about as liberal as they get and a great state senator. If he negotiated this to hold out an olive branch to Arnold and say, "We will work with you, if you work with us" he will gladly go after Arnold when Arnold breaks deals.

I'm not terribly pleased that SO MUCH POWER was given to Arnold, and did support Davis, but frankly, Davis had five years to fill these positions...

As history will one day prove, Arnold was placed through yet another electoral theft. Therefore, he is not legitimate. Therefore, those who willingly work with him are skating on treasonous ice - assuming they know he is not legit, of course.

35. John Burton doesn't play 'footsie' with any Republican
Senate Leader John Burton has gone to the mat with Republicans and Gray Davis too. You can bet if he made this decision it was with good reason.

This guy doesn't take any sh*t from anybody and always votes right.

Don't jump to conclusions over this. Also Gray Davis, unfortunately, is not a man given to appointing people with integrity.

John Burton has long been one of the feistiest Democrats in California. He isn't one to roll over and play dead. He's getting something for this and if Arnold doesn't live up to his end of the bargain, Burton will make him pay.
