UN suspends Afghan operations

United Nations - The United Nations has suspended operations in four southern Afghan provinces due to increasing violence and concerns that aid workers could be seen by local militants as targets, a top UN official has announced.

UN Under-secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Marie Guehenno told the UN Security Council on Friday the decision had been made because many of the fundamental causes of insecurity in Afghanistan "remain unresolved".

Guehenno said the insecurity came from extremist attacks, factionalised government ministries and the weakening of the political compact that supports the provisional government.

1. Afghanistan should have been Job #1

But the Bush administration was fixated on conquest of Iraq. We hired mercenaries that did not get the job done in Afghanistan. Al Qaeda still thrives as the US is bogged down in a needless war in Iraq. The Bush administration has failed miserably and must be held accountable.

5. "The job" was wrong. The invasion of Afghanistan was immoral and

illegal just as the war in Iraq is. Afghanistan did nothing to us. Bush had pre-planned that war just like the Iraq invasion. He threatened the Taliban with a "carpet of bombs" in July 2001 if they did not cooperate with their plans for an oil pipeline across Afghanistan.

Since when is carpet bombing a nation for ten months justified while hunting for a handful of SUSPECTS in an attack on the US? It is clearly UNJUST and ILLEGAL and IMMORAL. The Taliban had nothing to do with 9-11.

The Taliban offered to hand over OBL twice if Bush would provide evidence of his involvement. Bush refused. Bush had no evidence then and he has no evidence now. We are still waiting for evidence. Phony videos cooked up by Langley productions do not count. Nor do allegations of telephone conversations that no one knows the content of.

But we have murdered tens of thousands of Afghans who had not one thing to do with 9-11 or terrorism. We have devastated a country that did nothing to us.

America was wrong in Afghanistan and wrong in Iraq.

6. 9-11 was immoral. Attacking Afghanistan was justified.

The techniques the US used in Afghanistan were ineffective in capturing key personnel of Al Qaeda. If we had used more ground troops and relied less on air power, the mission would be going better. Afghanistan sponsored and supported the attacks on New York. We had every right to attack. But the Bush cabal was more interested in oil and money than shutting down terrorist operations. So we let warlords run amok as we bombed the countryside of Afghanistan, as Bin Laden and many others were able to escape.

They were not 'able' to escape, they were helped to escape. Do you remember reading at the time that our forces had bin laden and his aides pinned down in a cave complex? Our troops reported this to command and command sent word back to approach no further. Shortly thereafter, Pakistani helicopters landed to pick up bin laden and crew. Our troops reported this too, and were told to give it a free pass.

Said it before and I'll say it again. Osama bin Missing did then and does now work for the BFEE. Say what you will, anyone who does not believe in at least LIHOP is playing ostrich. I lean towards MIHOP, myself, but that's just my opinion.
