A spokesman for the 93-strong team representing 14 political groupings said his group opposed the U.S. presence in Iraq "and its tools," in an apparent reference to the U.S.-appointed Governing Council.
The Iraqi team held a three-hour meeting with Syrian Vice President Abdel-Halim Khaddam to discuss ways of "wrenching Iraq out of its dilemma," spokesman Saleh al-Mutlaq told reporters.
Asked about the outcome of the meeting, Mutlaq said: "We have reached an essential issue; the importance of unifying all national powers that agree on certain fundamentals for the formation of a temporary national council until the elections are carried out."
