4h ID Soldier Dies of Non-Hostile Gunshot Wound
This brings the October US Soldier Death Count up to 33. 27 US soldiers lost their lives in September, so it would definitely seem that it's been an especially bloody October. :-(

2. It's a definite possibility.

The best way to get a read on what actually happened is to look for local articles associated with this death in the next few days. Centcom won't give out much more info than what they've said.

I believe that the military has confirmed the number of suicides as 12 and is investigating another 13 possible. Maybe now 14.

6. No footage of flag-draped coffins at Dover AFB? Here's why:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=679&ncid=742&e=14&u=/usatoday/20031023/cm_usatoday/11917465

Pentagon officials point out that the ban on covering the return of dead soldiers was adopted at the end of the Clinton administration. Yet the policy has been breached several times with beneficial results for the military. When CIA (news - web sites) operative Johnny Spann was killed in Afghanistan (news - web sites) in December 2001, the media were allowed to cover the return of his remains, an event that spurred support for the war in Afghanistan.

Shielding these tragic arrivals from view is part of a troubling response to the public's recent war worries. In the past month, administration officials have criticized the media for painting too gloomy a picture of Iraq's postwar conditions. The reality, they say, is much more positive.

Throughout history, Americans have shown constancy in supporting just military endeavors. They persevered during World War II, even for much of the Vietnam War. But long-term support is dependent on honest portrayals. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld set the right standard last week in a candid memo to top staff obtained by USA TODAY. He acknowledged the enormous challenges in stabilizing Iraq and pushed top officials to think about how to address them.

13. Mind Control
The SHEEP need to be kept content. In spite of what everyone here thinks, the majority of Amerikans are sheep.

The neocons think the PRESS lost Viet-Nam. therefore a news blackout.

7. Question about "non-hostile"
Could some of you folks who've been in combat answer this? How often were individuals killed as a result of weapons misfiring, discharging while being cleaned, etc. Was that a rare occurance?

Since we get no real info on this I'm just wondering what could be reasonably attributed to the above. Knowing this, we could infer what could likely be due to suicide. Of course there's always "friendly fire".

Sadly, I guess even the families are not told the truth about how their son/daughter died.

9. I was almost 'offed' twice by 'friendly fire' in 'Nam.

My bunk was on the second floor of the barracks, above the arms room. We rotated various overnight perimeter guard assignments, returning in the morning and returning our weapons and ammo to the arms room. I worked nights and slept (or tried to) during the day. I was awakened by rifle fire. I looked up and saw three close holes in the corrugated roof almost directly above my head. I looked down and saw a neat hole in the plywood floor about 18" over and in line with my head. I scrambled out and went down to the arms room. The armorer had been checking to see if the weapons (M14s) were dirty/rusty. He was going along the rack, removing the trigger housing, checking it, replacing it and (because removing it cocks the trigger) releasing the trigger. Someone left a live round in the chamber. Blam! If it'd been a few rifles down the rack, I'd have been shipped home in a body bag.

Another time, the company clerk was dusting the CO's office. When he ran the duster over an AK47 (with a banana clip in place) the CO (a total idiot) had hanging on the wall behind his desk, it triggered the AK which was in full-auto mode with a chambered round and full clip. It stitched across the ceiling (which was the floor of the barracks above). The CO's office was at the other end from the arms room. I'd just walked through the area (above) where the rounds were fired.

The idiocy competed with the insanity. It wasn't "the world." Incidents like these weren't unusual.

12. Amazing!
how this administration tries to get total control of what we see and hear. Everything they don't want us to see is called 'classified', 'National security' and all that. What's amazing is how fast Bush will unclassify some bit of info if his butt is on the line. Makes your head spin.
