Suicide Bomber Kills 10 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide bomber drove an ambulance packed with explosives into security barriers outside the international Red Cross building on Monday, and an American general said about 10 people were killed in the blast. The bombing came a day after insurgents attacked a Baghdad hotel, killing a U.S. colonel.

Brig. Gen. Mark Hertling said three other vehicles exploded at police stations in the Baghdad area on Monday, the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

"From what our indications are, none of those bombers got close to the target either," Hertling said.

The Red Cross attack was "definitely" a suicide bombing, he said, adding that up to 10 Iraqis were killed and about 10 others were injured in that attack. Dr. Allawi Attiyah of the Ibn al-Nafeez hospital put the total at 10 dead and 12 injured.

The blasts come in the wake of a series of high-intensity attacks since the arrival of top US official Paul Wolfowitz to Iraq.

The dead included four Iraqi policemen while the injured included 10 US soldiers and seven Iraqi police personnel, according to medical sources, police and the US military.

In an unrelated incident, a US soldier was killed on Sunday night in a mortar attack west of Baghdad.

I'll lay 3:1 odds that he uses the word "evil" multiple times and swears that we won't be getting out of Iraq bla bla bla. Indicating, of course, that the rats have already made a long and careful choice of lifeboat.

I posted this AP report mostly to stop the foolish news conspiracy talk in GD. The more sources and details, the better, of course.
