Supreme Court may take terrorism cases in the near future

By Gina Holland
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court has stayed out of judging the Bush administration's terrorism-fighting strategy, but that soon could change.

"It's going to get harder and harder, I think, for the Supreme Court to stay out of these," American Civil Liberties Union legal director Steven Shapiro said.

The justices' next chance comes in November, when the court is expected to announce whether it will review cases involving the detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The detainees have been classified as enemy combatants and are being interrogated for information about terrorism. Critics argue that without court oversight, they could be held forever.

1. May they get enough of these cases
To occupy (deliberate word choice) them so that they will not have time to meddle in another presidential election!

2. I am "cautiously optimistic."
The noises from the more progressive three plus O'Connor and Kennedy are positive. I do think some of the more egregious Bush measures could be overturn. Hopefully the "Patriot Act" will expire and not be renewed. I think the republic can survive this fascist insurgence.

3. I hope they remember the Nuremburg trials.
Nazi judges didn't fare too well there. All they need to do is take one look at the Constitution. They would have to be beyond stupid to keep those people jailed forever.
