Victims of Nazi 'experiments' to be buried
Berlin - The red brick facade and manicured lawns of an east German clinic hide a chilling past: its role at the heart of a Nazi euthanasia programme that targeted children deemed unsuitable to live.

On Tuesday, six decades after they died, the brains of three child victims called Alfred, Guenther and Herbert are to be buried at the Goerden clinic in Brandenburg.

They are thought to be the last remains of hundreds of children who died at the research institute, their fate reflecting a Nazi obsession with forging a genetically as well as ideologically pure master race.

1. I don't see how they can claim it was "in the name of science"
Nothing could be further from the truth. A while back I looked rather extensively into the exact details of the "experiments" the Nazis did and almost none of them had any scientific merit whatsoever. Of the few that did the tests were so horridly controlled the data is invalid. The morality of the results never really entered into the discussion, because there were never any scientifically valid results.

It was all pseudoscience crap at the expense of human life. Truly sad, and pathetic. The "scientists" who performed these experiments not only had a shocking lack of ethics and morals, but a basic inability to even understand science itself.

3. And if it would?
One of the first things, the americans were mad about, was to get hands on the "scientific results", the nazis had achieved in the concentration camps.
It's still one of the darkest chapter of Nazi-Germany. I remember that just a few years ago, I was reading an article from a german doctor, whose teacher at the University did experiments with jewish women during the Nazi-times. This piece of garbage did the following experiment: women in the concentration camps were told that they would die within the next weeks. Then they were really killed. He wanted to find out about the effect off stress on the menstruation of women.
Although you might be right about the mediocre quality of these "scientists", I don't think that science and the violation of human rights and dignity exclude one another at all.
Medicine is a very special area. There's a kind of "etiquette" to remain silent and to stay together.
The "revolution" at the Universities during the 60s never really reached them. A lot of those students knew about what their teachers did and never asked questions.
It's really one of those things, I will never ever be able to understand: how could they let this people go on being doctors and university teachers, leading hospitals, treating patients in postwar Germany?
Hello from Germany,
Dirk

5. Actually I don't think that's quite right
I konw there has been a longstanding ethics issue about the question of whether to use data from human experiments done by the Nazis and Japanese. Can't remember the precise details but I know this was seriously debated for years, so there must have been some results there that were considered valid.
