Hundreds of Long Islanders stood outside Mepham High School yesterday to blast a handful of out-of-town picketers who said teaching tolerance of gays led to the football hazing incident that has rocked the school.

The picketers - eight family members from a church in Topeka, Kan., gathered on the sidewalk in front of the Bellmore school at 7 a.m. waving anti-gay signs, including one that read "God Hates Fags."

"When you teach children that it's okay to indulge in any kind of sex act that they like ... that it's okay to be gay, it is inevitable that they will end up being violent and doing things that they shouldn't," said Margie Phelps, who protested with a handful of relatives.

Debbie Saladino, 37, shook her head in disbelief as she surveyed the family of protesters in front of her daughter's school.

"How they can turn hazing into homosexuality is beyond me," she said. Then she spotted a sign held by one of the Phelps sisters reading, "Thank God for Sept. 11th."

Its basically an extended family. It claims to be Baptist but it is not recognised. They live in a large commune and pretty much all adults in the family are also lawyers. Those poor children. The Phelpses and their group came to the Detroit area about a year or so ago, to picket in front of the catholic church in Ferndale (St. James). I guess this parish is tolerant, by comparison to more conservative ones. After the lunatics left, a bunch of youth groups from area churches got together and washed the sidewalks where the protestors had marched.

Rev. Fred Phelps was a no-show in Pittsburgh, today, though his supporters showed-up downtown, and were met by resistance from a large contingent of counter-protestors and Mr. Rogers fans.

On Saturday, May 3rd, the much maligned Reverend Fred Phelps made the wise decision not to show his face in Pittsburgh. He had planned to protest the life of Mr. Rogers at a memorial service, but was nowhere to be seen. However, Phelps did send his family and church members to do his dirty work. As might be expected, the Phelps group was met by a large group of counter-protestors who did not want to hear Phelps' message of hate and intolerance, especially when directed at the much loved Mr. Rogers.

The Phelps group was encountered right at the memorial service at Heinz Hall, in downtown Pittsburgh. Counter-protestors attempted to surround the small group, but were ordered to move by police who claimed they were blocking the sidewalk.

There were about 150-200 counter-protestors, and less than 10 protestors in Phelps' entourage. The Phelps group, members of the Westboro Baptist Church, reportedly had signs such as "Thank God for 9-11," "Aids Cures Fags," and "Mr. Rogers: Burn in Hell."

These boils on the backside of humanity picketed Mr. Rogers' funeral because of his way of making kids feel that it's ok to be what they are,and that Rogers(an ordained minister)is condemned to hell for not using his television show to blast gays. I have to admit that people like this disrupting funerals strains my belief in total freedom of speech/assembly. People are going through the grief and loss of losing a loved one and they have to be subjected to this HATE? That just isn't right.

The Rev. Fred Phelps said displaying the Ten Commandments monument would force the city to allow other public displays as well, including his own.

Phelps' proposal was unanimously rejected Tuesday by the City Council, which then voted 5-4 to move the Ten Commandments monument into a plaza that will honor a variety of historic documents.
