A bruising election showdown looms for the PM, who is being attacked by not just the opposition but his own party as well

TOKYO - If yesterday's heavy downpour is anything to go by, the next 12 days will be a trying period for Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

Official campaigning kicked off yesterday for the general election on Nov 9 that is not expected to be a shoo-in for Mr Koizumi, who faces sharp criticism from within and outside the party.
Mr Koizumi is using the elections to seek a fresh mandate to pursue much-needed reforms but he is openly contradicted by a sizeable number of LDP members.
