Human Rights Watch Claims that Venezuela's State News Agency Distorted Their Position on Freedom of Expression

Caracas, Oct 29 (Venezuelanalysis.com).- On Tuesday, Human Rights Watch issued a press release accusing Venezuela’s state news agency Venpres of distorting their position with regard to freedom of expression in Venezuela.

HRW refers specifically to a Venpres/Radio Nacional de Venezuela news piece which translation was published by Venezuelanalysis.com at www.venezuelanalysis.com/news.php?newsno=1077. The original piece in Spanish was published at Radio Nacional's web site (See Human Rights Watch: "En Venezuela existe una amplia libertad de expresión"), and by Venpres on their web site www.venpres.gov.ve.

On Wednesday October 21st, HRW's Executive Director for the Americas Division José Miguel Vivanco, along with representatives from several Non Governmental Organizations, participated at a breakfast at the residence of Venezuela’s ambassador to the U.S. Bernardo Alvarez with Venezuela’s Minister of Infrastructure Diosdado Cabello, and Minister of Information and Communications Jesse Chacón.

"Venezuela nowadays enjoys the amplest margins of freedom of expression," said Vivanco in his introductory statements. The audio of his statements shows that Venpres' news piece quotes Mr. Vivanco's words, but Venpres failed to mention Vivanco's well known criticisms of the proposed Law of Social Responsability in Radio and Television. However, the Venpres piece does no link at any point Mr. Vivanco to any statement in support of the mentioned Law.
