GOP unity is strained by attacks (Lott: "Just mow the whole place down")
Edited on Wed Oct-29-03 01:13 PM by Barrett808
Senior Republicans have begun raising concerns about the administration’s strategy in Iraq amid daily attacks on U.S. forces there.

But congressional Republicans still echo President Bush’s overall positive assessment of reconstruction, even as some warn of political trouble unless signs of improvement become clearer fast.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who recently compared aspects of the conflict to Vietnam, yesterday said U.S. forces need to be more proactive.

“To set up roadblocks after the bomb goes off is not the answer,” he said. “We’ve got to get into prevention.”

...

Asked whether he favored any policy changes in Iraq, Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) responded: “We need to have a different mix of troops, is the key. We may need to move some troops around.”

Lott suggested moving more troops from the relatively stable south closer to the region around Tikrit, where attacks on U.S. forces have been common. He said there was a need for more trained military police, adding that his comments were not a criticism.

“Honestly, it’s a little tougher than I thought it was going to be,” Lott said. In a sign of frustration, he offered an unorthodox military solution: “If we have to, we just mow the whole place down, see what happens. You’re dealing with insane suicide bombers who are killing our people, and we need to be very aggressive in taking them out.”

like if people like him were "agressively Liberated" Or
better yet if he and his kind were "mowed over".

3. wow the Hair Helmet wants to "mow the place down."
That should win those hearts and minds. Didn't we try that in Vietnam, when we de-foliated the jungles and flew B-52's over the north?

Didn't work so well, it seems.

We have taken the law into our own hands, we don't investigate or count civilian deaths, we have thrown the Geneva Convention Regs in the shredder and we are looting the assets of the unarmed country we attacked.

Everything is going according to plan...

5. Oh I get it! If they refuse to be "liberated" by God we'll just "Mow the
place down!"

Lott should be thrown out of the Senate entirely for this remark. This goes against everything the Repugs claimed about "Liberating Iraq" from an Evil dictator with WMD.

The object wasn't to "harm the Iraqi people" we were told but to give them "Democracy."

Now a former Speaker of the Senate says "Mow it Down?" I hope the "powers" that blew Lott out of his former position of power will now go after him to make sure he's booted out.

On 29 October 2003, Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) is reported to have suggested his final solution to the Iraq problem:

If we have to, we just mow the whole place down, see what happens. You’re dealing with insane suicide bombers who are killing our people, and we need to be very aggressive in taking them out." We request that Senator Lott be sent immediately to Iraq to, in his own words, "mow the place down". Mr. Lott would bring the appropriate aggressiveness needed to stop "insane suicide bombers who are killing our people." It is clear that only Senator Lott uderstands the situation in Iraq, so it would be in America's best interest that the Senator go to Iraq immediately and clean it up.

We note that Senator Lott declined military service when when he had the opportunity ("Chickenhawk Database", http://www.nhgazette.com/cgi-bin/NHGstore.cgi?user_action=list&category=%20NEWS%3B%20Chickenhawks), but with a few weeks of modern Army training, he should be prepared to patrol the streets of Fallujah and start mowing with gusto.

It's all about talking in broad, emotionally-charged terms with no perception of the reality, and no real thought on how to make what is said to happen.

"We need to get those terrahists!"

Yeah, but how?

"Mow the place down!"

What does that entail, exactly? Are you talking about razing Baghdad? Nuclear weapons? What?

Just up the inflamatory ante. Smart move when it isn't your spine about to take potshots from a sniper, inflamed by rhetoric and perhaps believing that if they don't act quickly to discourage the Americans on the ground that the US leadership will let loose with more shock and awe. Sheer irresponsibleness from the former maj. leader.

From a PBS documentary VIETNAM: A Television History LBJ Goes to War (1964-1965) (Transcript)
:

<clips>

NARRATOR

To the Communists in Hanoi, America's presence in the South was yet another act of foreign aggression. They recalled 1,000 years of struggle against foreign invaders: Chinese, Japanese, French. And now they faced Americans.

NARRATOR

Ho Chi Minh stepped up his support for the Vietcong at the same time Johnson renewed the American commitment to defeat them. Each responded to the chaos in the South with new resolve.

...SENATOR WAYNE MORSE

Being in the minority never proves that you're wrong. In fact, history is going to record that Sen. Greuning and I voted in the interest of the American people this morning when we voted against this resolution.

And I'd have the American people remember what this resolution really is. It's a resolution which seeks to give the President of the United States the power to make war without a declaration of war.

NARRATOR

Lyndon Johnson signed into law the Tonkin Gulf Resolution. Congress gave the President full authority for military action in Southeast Asia. Backed by both political parties, Johnson had removed the war as an issue from the campaign.

32. The stupidest thing about this theory...
apart from its utter violation of every principle America is supposed to stand for, is the plain fact that IT JUST DOESN'T WORK.

It didn't work for Napoleon in Spain, it didn't work for Hitler in Europe, and it's not working for Putin in Chechnya. After four years the Russians are still suffering daily attacks, with 8 killed and 5 wounded in the past 24 hours: http://www.azdailysun.com/non_sec/nav_includes/story.cfm?storyID=75790

There are too few American soldiers and too many Iraqis who have too many weapons and too many places to hide. I don't see any way around it short of using a nuclear bomb or some other terrible weapon of mass destruction that would annihilate every living thing in the targeted zone.

On the other hand, no one can deny that it would be a most beautiful and fitting capstone to Trent Lott's career to make American soldiers more brutal than the Nazis. Doesn't the mere thought make your heart beat with pride?

Then there's the sheer criminality of it, which would get the nasty ole cracker hanged if there were a nation or coalition of nations that was strong enough to impose its will on us.

35. Nam didn't work either, and the WMD--we did that to Japan
and that didn't win us any prizes. 250,000 people in Nagasaki and Heroshima wiped out in with the drop of two bombs. That count doesn't even begin to touch the long term effects of what we did to them. There's also the matter of genocide against millions of Native Americans right here at home. :puke:

and the Nazi thing--Gitmo is the closest thing so far and I don't doubt for a second that some of these soldiers are as brutal as the Nazis--our history around the world proves that. :puke:

40. Helen Thomas: "What are you gonna do, bomb them into democracy?"
She's beautiful!! and then that f*ck'n Ari threatened her.

Here's the transcript:

" MR. FLEISCHER: I hope -- (laughter) -- at the same time. No, the President, of course, believes that democracy can spread to Iraq. Why shouldn't it? Democracy is not boxed in. Democracy doesn't live in limits. Democracy, as the President says, is God's gift to the world. Liberty does not come from America. Liberty is a naturally endowed right that comes from the Creator, according to our own Declaration of Independence. There is no reason in the world that the President does not think that democracy can spread. And the President does believe that the people of Iraq are fully capable of living under a democratic way of life. Of course, they are.

Q Then why are you going to bomb them? (Laughter.) I mean, how do you bomb people back to democracy? This is a question of conquest. They didn't ask to be liberated by the United States. This is our self-imposed political solution for them.

MR. FLEISCHER: Let me guess that you will not be at the speech tonight. Helen, the President is going to --

Q I'll be very interested in what the President has to say because I don't think -- I think if you ask five people anywhere, what's the reason the President wants to go to war, you'll get five different answers. Usually there's one defining moment and solution.

MR. FLEISCHER: Tonight, the President is going to discuss this. I think you will hear the President tonight talk about the threat of Saddam Hussein and how he poses a danger to the American --

Q In 12 years he hasn't done anything.

Fax to my senators -- any suggestions?
The Honorable Patty Murray
United States Senate
173 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-4701
DC Phone:202-224-2621
DC Fax:202-224-0238

Dear Senator Murray,

On 29 October 2003, Sen. Trent Lott is reported to have suggested his final solution to the Iraq problem:

"We need to have a different mix of troops, is the key. We may need to move some troops around. Honestly, it’s a little tougher than I thought it was going to be. If we have to, we just mow the whole place down, see what happens. You’re dealing with insane suicide bombers who are killing our people, and we need to be very aggressive in taking them out." ("GOP unity is strained by attacks", By Geoff Earle, http://www.thehill.com/news/102903/gopunity.aspx)

This kind of reckless and violent rhetoric is what got us into the quagmire in the first place. It should not be allowed to go unanswered. Not only is such a "solution" against every principle for which this nation claims to stand, it is also impractical (as Mr. Putin is learning in Checnya). Sen. Lott should be called to account and, if necessary, censured.

Please do not allow this statement to pass unnoticed in the halls of government.

Sincerely,

Barrett808

39. That's a great letter, Barrett.
Short, sweet, and very to the point.

Uuh, mind if I use it as a model to send to my reps?

47. You took the words right out of my mouth, Bozita ...
I was going to ask Barrett the same question!

"Uuh, mind if I use it as a model to send to my reps?"

It really is an excellent letter, Barrett! :) As was said, it's short and sweet and IMO, gets the point across very, very well.

36. Brilliant. We illegally and immorally invade a non-aggressive
country...the people fight back to defend their country from our aggressions and they are "insane suicide bombers"???? This jerk needs to be in the Federal penitentiary. He is a false christian and a lunatic to boot. Get these murdering fools out of office!

45. So, that's what W was trying to say the other day when he uttered this:
"The ambassador and the general
were briefing me on the—the vast
majority of Iraqis want to live
in a peaceful, free world. And we
will find these people and we will
bring them to justice."—
Washington, D.C., Oct. 27, 2003

Thanks Trent for the translation!

46. Just called my senators
Sen. Murray's staffer laughed sadly and seemed interested, asked for the source (TheHill.com). Sen. Cantwell's staffer seemed kind of puzzled, like "Why are you telling me this?" But they both promised to pass it up to the Senators, fwiw.

49. shades of Reagan
Didn't he propose in 1968 or thereabouts that North Vietnam be bombed into a 'parking lot'?

Same mentality. When the little boys who have never fought a war get frustrated, they just want to kick over the chess board.

54. Trent Lott-Scumball Extraordinaire
Edited on Wed Oct-29-03 05:29 PM by benfranklin1776
Trent would have fit in nicely as the unit commander at My Lai but of course he did not serve in Vietnam,
preferring to attend to his duties as cheerleader and chief racial enforcer in college in Mississippi. Thankfully for the lives of Vietnamese civilians he did not serve.
Obviously in Trent's world anyone who is not like himself i.e. a white, Confederate sympathizing, racist, cast reject from Deliverance should be either forcibly segregated or "mown down."

57. Can't wait to hear what Mike Malloy says about Lott's
'mow em down' comment.

I can already see the damage control on Lott's newest, Stalinesk,
comment:

"It was taken out of context."

"Figure of speech."

"Just jokin."

Spin spin spin...

68. Could someone alert this up in GD Forum. I didn't know there was action
proposed on this thread because I saw it very early today and just got back and see that folks are faxing their Senators about this. It's too late for me to deal with the Petition and Faxing, but if someone could put it in GD it would get even more action for tomorrow a.m.
