In a quickly arranged news conference Tuesday at the White House, Bush tried to cast the situation in a better light, urging Americans not to buy into criticism of the mission as he has painted it.
That did not keep him from underscoring 17 times in under an hour of questions and answers that "Iraq is a dangerous place," going so far as to compare violence there with the September 11, 2001 attacks on US targets.
Since the president announced the end of major combat operations May 1, 115 US troops have been killed in combat and about 1,000 more injured according to the Pentagon (news - web sites). It is a toll that has taken a heavy toll on Bush's own popularity.
The national newspaper USA Today noted that since the statue of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) was toppled in Baghdad six months ago, more than a quarter of Americans who had seen the war as justified have changed their minds, putting Bush in a "perilous" place.
.....I hope this is not a dupe because I LOVE that headline!!
