Kerry Severs Ties in Religion Flap
Kerry Severs Ties in Religion Flap

Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) broke ties with an Arizona legislator who had endorsed his presidential campaign amid allegations that the lawmaker was trying to use religion to win over supporters of rival Joe Lieberman (news - web sites).

The Arizona Republic reported Wednesday that state Democratic Rep. Ben Miranda was trying to persuade backers of Lieberman to switch allegiance because the Connecticut senator, who is Jewish, does not campaign on Friday nights and Saturdays in observance of the sabbath.

7. Really
I'm not a fan of Holy Joe, but to use his religion like this is pretty damn low, IMO.

2. Keep religion out of it
worship what you like, but religion needs to be told forcefully by someone with clout, that they need to get out of politics and stop interfering with government. All of them.

All religions need to keep their tenets and their beliefs out of this government. To protest, to intimidate, to make a stink in front of abortion clinics with your toddler children in hand yelling as loud as you, beside you, in the absurd notion that all person MUST be forced to abide by your religion, even though they are within the law, is tyranny and it is tyranny of the majority, something that the founders sought to protect the minority from. Keep your religion to your self,in your home and in your churches--no need to try to force others to abide by it by trying to change the laws of the country to suit your male hierophants.

4. of course
kerry would never allow this kind of crap. and not just because of his jewish roots. but because it's the right thing to do. compare this to bush and his nasty campaign against mccain. bush not only allowed the nasty stuff to go on, but he WANTED it to happen.

5. Agreed. Praising Kerry.
I assume Kerry investigated and concluded his supporter was in the wrong. Good move.

6. Good to see that Kerry can do quick damage control
That's going to be a major element of any campaign against Bush, so I'm glad to see he knows when to cut off the wrong people instead of keeping them around. Good for him!

8. I got flamed last night for posting the original article about this
a bunch of Kerry supporters were dismissing the claims out-of-hand and attacking me for "posting it even though I knew it wasn't true".

I made no comments on the veracity of the claims, but regardless, I think Kerry made the right decision.

9. Flamed?

I don't see any flaming here. Most of the comments I see in this thread aren't even from Kerry people.

I think Kerry people pretty much just took a wait and see approach. We don't have to get all in a tizz because we know Kerry is a man of integrity and would act quickly and honorably if this were true. And would blow it right out of the water if it were false. That's why we support him.

Oh, and by the way, that's what REAL power is all about.
