Congress issues Iraq deadline to CIA

A powerful committee of the US Senate has given the CIA 48 hours to supply files on intelligence it gathered on Iraq prior to the outbreak of war.

The Senate Intelligence Committee said the CIA had until noon on Friday to produce the files and schedule interviews with its operatives.

The letter, signed by Republican Senator Pat Roberts and senior Democrat Senator John Rockefeller, was a response to a letter from Mr Tenet on Friday which promised to supply the relevant files "as soon as possible".

However, the Senate committee said it found that phrase "troubling" and consequently it set a deadline.
