??(CNN) -- The first cloud of electrified solar gas began buffeting our planet's magnetosphere before dawn EST Wednesday, generating bright auroras, jolting power grids and stunning a handful of satellites. The solar storm sparked auroras deep into the continental United States before dawn Wednesday, including this one over Colorado captured in a time-lapse exposure.

??Our planet managed to endure the brunt of the Wednesday storm, unleashed Tuesday by the third most powerful solar flare, without major problems.
??But late Wednesday, solar scientists observed another big solar explosion, one of the top 20 on record, which directed another huge cloud of supercharged gas in our direction.

??"This is also a very fast one," said European Space Agency solar scientist Paal Brekke. "It could arrive already tomorrow afternoon or evening if it does not slow down."

The giant sunspot that delivered the last two big solar flares has been given a 50% chance to produce another strong (X-class) flare within the next 24 hours. However, the results here on earth depend very much on the direction the ejection of hot gas will take, and on the state of the earth's magnetic field at the time of impact.

There isn't enough tinfoil in the house for me to subscribe to this one, but I did get a cool, X-File-y chill reading a post from 2000, which said Lockhead Martin (in league with reptillian aliens, naturally - Lockhead Martian?), was working on a program which, in the near future, would trigger huge Coronal Mass Ejections for the purpose of preventing the return of "Christ energy" and propagating a rule based on fear.
