Child prostitution blooms on German-Czech border

The German-Czech border region has become a haven for child prostitution, where youngsters and infants from across eastern Europe are often sold into sex slavery by their families to be abused by German sex tourists and paedophiles, UNICEF said on Tuesday.

Prostitution rings are bringing minors from throughout the Czech Republic and other central and eastern European countries to the German border, according to a study presented in Berlin by the UN children's organization and ECPAT, an anti-child exploitation group.

"It is shocking that children right in our backyard are being mistreated unscrupulously," UNICEF patron Christina Rau, wife of German President Johannes Rau, told reporters.

"We must do everything to help the victims and protect other children from these crimes."

Are you telling me every person who lands in the Philippines is able to hire a child prostitute within 30 minutes of landing but our CIA/FBI/DIA Asscroft, Mueler, Tenet, Bush... don't know this is going on? 1. This is horribly unsurprising.

I remember visiting Czechoslovakia back in 1990, when it was that... we were touring newly privatized businesses, breweries and such that used to be state-owned and were doing their best to enter capitolism.

Very ugly situation developing, even then, for those of us who could see it. Basically good people playing catch-up. They were so poor, relative to their neighbors. A German Mark had such an inflated value, same with the dollar. Even then, there were the beginnings of businesses that would offer "tours", some of them on the up-and-up, some not, for the trainloads of Germans who would ride over, drink, eat, and whatever, and leave the same night. I remember thinking it was like the relationship between San Diego and Tijuana; they'd just come over to party. And we all know how good that is for a developing economy.

Made me rather cross, actually. Prague was such a lovely city -- I know it became fashionable shortly thereafter for college kids to go over, teach english, or just live on the cheap and listen to Dvorak. But it was just an exploitation of currency that all of us saw coming a mile away, and were powerless to stop.

yesterday I read an article about how the marriage age was reduced to as young as 9 when Iran was taken over by the fundamentalists! (latest Smithsonian magazine)

How could someone marry off their 9 year old daughter or son????

I was still playing with my baby dolls at 9....

6. When I was in the Army..

When I was in the Army (ours) I was a platoon leader in an Armor company. There were two guys assigned to my platoon at different times, one of whom was married to a 13 year old. The other was married to a 14 year old, but he had married her when she was 11!! Eleven!!

The second guy had come to me to ask for time off to get his wife out of jail. Being a "veteran" by this time, I called the Sheriff to confirm. He told me they had her, but transferred her to juvenile detention.

Me: "Why the heck would you do that"?
Him: "Well, she's a minor. She's 14."

Then I told him about the guy in my platoon that claimed he was married to her. He said that's what she had said, but they didn't believe her.

(As I recall, both of them were from the Ozarks, for whatever that means. Parents approved of the marriage.)

During Officer Basic they told me to expect the unexpected, and boy, were they right! Anyone who thinks that the GI is like Johnny next door, or the guys you went to high school with, has no clue as to the "other America" out there.
