Official Aware of Gravity of U.S. Image Problem
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration's candidate for the task of improving its image abroad said on Wednesday she knew the gravity of the problem from "troubling and disturbing" views she heard as ambassador to Morocco.

<snip>

Opinion polls show that despite tens of millions of dollars spent on advertising campaigns the reputation of the United States has deteriorated sharply in the past year, mainly because of the invasion of Iraq (news - web sites), U.S. Middle East policy and the Bush administration's treatment of old European allies.

Critics of the Bush administration say the problem is with U.S. policies, not with the way they are presented.

But Tutwiler, testifying to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in a confirmation hearing, gave no indication what she thought might be the root of the image problem.

2. Dammit! We Need More Better Propoganda!
The Emperor demands it! And if it doesn't actually make people like us, we'll tell the American public that it did work and that people really DO like us! If the propoganda doesn't work, then we'll bomb more brown people until they love us! Tough love's a bitch!

4. This is really unnecessary, and a non-issue

"image" does not have the potential to negatively impact on achievement of regime military and economic objectives.

The President has been very clear: you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.

Regime policies are not formulated based on "world opinion."

It is gratifying, however, to see compassionate conservatism at work in giving a needed boost to advertising agencies whose non-government clients may be cutting back budgets, as the economy makes the necessary transitions to assist the war on terror.
