JUST CAME IN :UN announces temporary pullout

THE United Nations yesterday announced a temporary withdrawal of its international staff from Baghdad amid increasing concern about security in the Iraqi capital.

The UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, said he had ordered the withdrawal to reassess the conduct of UN operations after recent attacks appeared to signal "a new phase" in postwar violence.

The decision came as the United States called for a speeding up of plans to put Iraqi security forces on the streets of Baghdad.

Mr Annan said the UN did not intend a permanent pullout from Baghdad. "Of course, it depends on what further developments are coming, but it is not our intention now to pull out totally."
