US glumly accepts withdrawals from Iraq

Washington - The United States on Thursday glumly accepted the withdrawal of foreign United Nations and Red Cross workers from Iraq, conceding it could not argue with the rationale behind the decisions.

"I think the first thing to say about some of these drawdowns is it's understandable," State Department spokesperson Richard Boucher said, hesitating before declining to characterise the US reaction as one of "disappointment."

5. I think the Marshall plan lasted more like 5 years or so
Here's a link to a timeline:
http://www.usaid.gov/multimedia/video/marshall/timeline.html

It says that the Marshall plan was terminated on June 30, 1950. Certainly wasn't the end of foreign aid, but Germany had been 'rebuilt', such as it was, by that point.

One thing that's not so good over there compared to post WWII (but is a poor comparison), is that there weren't nearly any casualties during the Allied occupation of Germany. The 'SS Werewolf guerillas' that Rumsfeld spoke of were mostly a myth (there were just a handful of them, and they were almost completely ineffective).

7. Exactly
And the German people, who were left alive, were pretty much sick of the Nazi party and were happy to have anyone help them out. I think we were expecting the same in Iraq, but for many complex reasons, mostly religion and percieved US intentions, caused it to fail. We also convinced Germany that they had been beaten. Also, the Germans remembered at time when they were free to speak their minds and not live under Nazi oppression. The Iraqi's have no frame of reference, Saddam has ruled there for most of everyone's life. Remember, 50% of Iraqis are under 30 years old.

I think that Saddam's longer reign is a harder issue to get over than we realize. It's Helsinki syndrome to some degree, and who can blame them. Iraq went to shit after we came in. At least under Saddam they had the illusion of safety and prosperty, now it's just a shithole and we're not accomplishing that much. Of course they want Saddam back and the Americans out, they don't know better, but the trama that has been visited on these people isn't going away in a few months. This will take many years of work and, sadly, many more dead Americans.

10. Who's gonna help them.
With the pull-out of the UN and Red Cross, will the U.S. be taking over providing these services to the Iraqi's, or will they do without. This latest failure must mean .....what....more success.

12. I bet they feel real glum
As the PNAC'ers are wringing their hands as their diabolical plan comes together. The less to share the booty with.
If Colin and the US wanted the UN or Red Cross to stay, they would be making every attempt to make their stay safe and fruitful.

14. And in the end US soldiers will be the only targets left.
But we all have to remember monkeyboy's twisted formula for success:

US deaths = US success

"Bring em on!"
