"ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A cancer researcher was indicted on manslaughter charges, accused of causing a patient's death after fraudulently enrolling him and other veterans in drug studies.
Prosecutors said Paul Kornak, 52, also posed as a doctor but never completed his training at a school in the Caribbean island of Grenada.
The indictment said Kornak altered the medical histories of dozens of patients over more than three years to get them into drug studies at the Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albany, where he worked as a chief research assistant.
The indictment Wednesday said the fraud led to the death of 71-year-old James DiGeorgio, who died a few weeks after enrolling in a drug-research program for gastric cancer. "
