Dennis Miller To Host New Primetime Talk Show For CNBC
CNBC and NBC Studios have signed an exclusive, multi-year deal with Emmy Award-winning comedian Dennis Miller to host an hour-long primetime program debuting in January 2004. The announcement was made today by Pamela Thomas-Graham, President and CEO of CNBC.

Said Miller: “With all that’s going on in the world today, it’s nice to have a nightly platform to air my opinions. I’m happy to be back in the NBC family.”

“Dennis’ blazing wit and razor sharp insights have made him one of the most provocative and noted voices of our time. We are thrilled that he has chosen CNBC as his new primetime home,” said Thomas-Graham. “Our audience demands smart and sharp programming, and Dennis’s new show will more than deliver on those expectations.”

“Having Dennis Miller return to the NBC family is one of the most exciting things to happen to us in years,” said Jeff Zucker, President, NBC Entertainment (who also oversees NBC Studios). “His wit, uncanny takes on life and fearlessness have made him a popular figure -- and this is the next logical step in his brilliant career.”

5. I think your sense of smell
is right on the money. He'll probably get the same .2 or .3 rating that all the other NBC cable shows get in primetime. Not that it will matter as long as he is towing the right line.

the two most recent steps having been losing his show on HBO & getting booted from ABC Monday night football.

it's hard to tell who's more desperate at this point… Miller or CNBC.

4. There ought to be a law against this
Miller has been mentioned as a potential challenger to Barbara Boxer. Giving Miller a TV show amounts to a huge in-kind contribution to his campaign. If Miller declares, he should have to pay CNBC back the value of all the free airtime he has received.

27. No law.
It would only be a problem after Miller declared as a candidate. We had the same problem here with a County Commissioner candidate who was doing a radio talk show. Kept on the doing the show for weeks after he declared; but of course, since he was a Republican, nobody did a damned thing about it.

32. Didn't Reagun repeal the Fairness Doctrine?
I'm pretty sure that Reagun was against fairness and ended fairness, as we know it, during his term of office: this allows the drug-addled Limbaugh to rail on for three hours a day, five days a week, explaining how great Bush is and how evil Clinton is - and he gets paid millions for all this free political advertising.

Pretty good deal if you're a fascist!

20. Perfect timing... He can use his show to trash her ..every day
Edited on Fri Oct-31-03 04:08 AM by SoCalDem
just like KABC had Bill Simon as a guest host for THREE HOURS at a time several days a week.. All they did for those 3 hours was take calls and trash Davis for hours on end..

I called the California Dem office, and they just kind of whimpered.."what-are-ya-gonna-do"?

This nonsense HAS to be stopped somehow.. Think about it.. we are not allowed to mount an effective protest because of "1st amendment" zones.. We are not allowed to get our message out at all, unless we pay through the nose for regular ads... the whole of the media is predominantly rightwinger and is on 24/7... When our guys PAY to run ads, as soon as the ad is over, the "host & guest & callers" just spend the rest of the "show" demeaning and yukking it up at the commercial they just aired..

We get little or no decent , balanced coverage, and the radical right has a 24/7 free microphone, any time they want..

29. Damning by faint praise
His wit, uncanny takes on life and fearlessness have made him a popular figure -- and this is the next logical step in his brilliant career.

"Popular figure"? That's all you got? "Logical step"? In the land of hype--that invented hype, not to put too fine a point on it--this is what we come up with?

Perhaps Zucker's enthusiasm was curbed somewhat by the knowledge that Miller's brilliant career has included such other logical steps as "sports commentator"--member that one?--and numerous other forgettable attempts to make a dent in the public consciousness. Including didn't he already have a talk show once?

To think outta the cable news networks this one used to be fairly watchable. Whats with this crap, giving every extreme rightwing shitbag their very own show? 36. That's it
Lately I've gotten into the habit of tuning in Tweety due to his hosting the candidates, but he is just too offensively stupid. Last night I heard him drop a contemptuous remark about environmentalists, he wasn't even thinking, it was just automatic and it got me to wondering where this mindset came from.

When I was growing up, ecology and the mission to protect and preserve the earth was a victory of hope over greed. Now people could give a shit and resent anyone suggesting their SUV obsession is irresponsible.

It has all been twisted around, and corporations have coopted green terminology while successfully demonizing environmentalists as the enemy---or for that matter, anyone who speaks up for and defends the interests of the citizens as a despised liberal.

It has been a very successful sustained marketing campaign and now idiots, like Tweety, automatically respond and people listening just accept it unconsciously: environmentalists stand in the way of progress. This makes it all so much more difficult to expose the agenda of the Right when the very forces who challenge it are disdained by those who don't even realize they are setting it up to fail. So Tweety will rant about Enron or neocons, but he will never make the underlying connection that his attitudes are responsible for empowering that corruption.

It has been a subtle campaign to derail the once noble objectives of the 60's and now Democrats are perceived as weak. Not only because of the successful campaign to portray them as weak and ineffective (note the recent repeated uniform criticism of the Democratic field as being "weak" in comparison to Bush), but also due to the internal identity crisis of the Democrats, unable to promote themselves effectively because they allowed the victimization to progress without countermeasures. Democrats feel they have to play according to Republican definitions of national security and foreign policy even though the Republicans have made a mess of it all. This, I think is why the Democrats can't fight back effectively, because they doubt their own message. And this is why Dean has been so effective--his confidence.

People sense the confidence of their leaders--witness the non-stop disaster of Bush, but at the same time the effort into portraying the Democrats as "weak". This is how the Republicans win--not on their own record, but by constantly sending out these little sound bites and suggestions that pundits like Tweety's pick up with his casual comment about environmentalists. The Democratic strategy since Clinton has been to distance themselves from what the Republicans target. And so, we are where we are, and buried somewhere on the LBN thread is a story about a group of Democrats bursting in on the Republicans trying to slice up a medicaid bill --but there it is buried.

Tweety may be stupid, but Miller is mean and sneering and they are both dangerous because they are bullies. Republicans are strong because they are bullies, Democrats have to do more than resist the bullies, they have to be strong, and being strong is Dean's greatest asset - so let's not rip him down for it.

39. Well, hold on with the complete re-write...
...I have no qualms with the present dislike of DenDen, but I take issue with the characterization of him being a complete tool for all time. I remember thinking he was brilliant on SNL, and he gave some blisteringly funny barbs directed at Bush the Elder and Rawhide. I used to find his HBO show intermittently brilliant, back when he was a centrist, or a pramatist, as he characterized himself at the time (mid-90's). I now feel completely betrayed by his about-face, and like the rest of you feel it's all about jumping that gravy train, but IMHO he 'was' a funny funny man, once upon a time. Now he can eat shit, though.

51. Miller used to be funny
and then he got married and had kids. Now I'm not knocking people who get married and have kids, but there's an old joke about how people are usually liberal until they have daughters...in Miller's case this ended up being true. Examine his life history and work and you will notice that almost the exact moment that he has kids he starts turning into a entertainment whore, willing to appear in any ad or movie just to make a buck.

I'm not sure that Miller has even gone RW, but I do know that he tends to follow the money these days.
