U.S. Rejected Davis on Aid to Clear Trees
FEMA spent six months studying the governor's request, then turned it down hours before fires began, saying state was already getting funds.

By Gregg Jones and Dan Morain, Times Staff Writers

SACRAMENTO — The Bush administration took six months to evaluate Gov. Gray Davis' emergency request last spring for $430 million to clear dead trees from fire-prone areas of Southern California.

The request was finally denied Oct. 24, only hours before wildfires roared out of control in what has become the largest fire disaster in California history.

Rep. Mary Bono (R-Palm Springs), a leader in the effort to get federal assistance for fire prevention, questioned Thursday why the Federal Emergency Management Agency did not rule sooner.

"FEMA's decision was wrong," Bono said. "The timing couldn't have been worse.... We knew this disaster was going to happen with certainty. It was only a matter of when, and we were trying to beat the clock with removing the dead trees."

The POS BULLshy admin took six months to evaluate Davis' 430 million dollar request last spring because monkey knows that money would be better spent killing people in Iraq and stealing their oil.

REPUBLICAN REPUKES!!!! SCrew YOU....How dare they politicized this thing. Since they opened the floodgate, they will get the bunt of it.

I wonder how many Californians are feeling now when they realize that their governor is actually a responsible human being.

3. A perfect example of why Democratic leaders are worthless
Davis knew what FEMA had done and yet said nothing in his defence excpet blame the fires on God! The congressional Democrats knew what FEMA had done. If the tables were turned they would have hammered the Democrats and yet what do the Democrats do? They pose for photo ops and say, "we want to play nice with Ahhhnold!" Its disgusting and the mentality of a permanent minority partys.

Edited on Fri Oct-31-03 04:35 AM by La_Serpiente
wanted to turn this issue in a partisan one. He knew that everyone in California would be like, "STOP PLAYING POLITICS DAVIS!!!". He also probably knew that, "What's the use of blaming? I am already out already." It was the Republicans that opened the Pandora's Box.

You sure seem like the freepish type when you say "permanent minority".

6. So you think Democratic leadership especially since the 2000 elections
has not been a "permanent minority" mentality? You want proof of what I say?

Republicans kick Democrats ass every chance they get and I think its kind of freepish of you to accuse me of being a freepish!

Davis, FEMA head deny foot-dragging on firefighting planes

TIM MOLLOY, Associated Press Writer Thursday, October 30, 2003
(10-30) 18:37 PST SAN DIEGO (AP) --

Gov. Gray Davis and a top official in the Bush Administration rejected allegations from Republican lawmakers Thursday that state forestry officials dragged their feet on seeking approval to use military planes to help fight the region's deadly wildfires.

Lawmakers including U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, an El Cajon Republican, have said C-130 cargo planes that Hunter lined up sat idle for days because the California Department of Forestry didn't act quickly enough to seek federal approval for their use.

Edited on Fri Oct-31-03 05:08 AM by La_Serpiente
You make it seem as though Democrats are a "permanent minority". I beg to differ since we are trying to change the political landscape so we can become a political majority.

I wouldn't say permanent. I would say temporary.

And true, there are some instances where Democrats do have that permanent minority mentality. However, I don't think this should fall under it. This was obviously a tragic event and I personally feel that it is unethical to politicize it. However, the Republicans are the ones who shot the first bullet.

When it comes to issues of war, taxes, etc, that's when it is appropriate.

8. There is a pattern Republicans follow and one Democrats follow.
The Republicans accuse and accuse and accuse and the Democrats weakly refute or deny and because the Republicans accuse longer and louder the media replays what the Republicans say. Once the Republicans get the microphone they hammer on the Democrats failures. The Democrats are too timid and if they don't rekindle their fire they will remain the minority party.
If only to see what a firebrand Democrat could do I'd love to see Al Sharpton be the Democratic nominee! But alas the U.S. is too racist to elect a Black President. Too bad. The Democrats would benefit from his firebrand rhetoric.

No wonder many people don't like politics. It is because we have to succumb to these tactics in order to get our agenda across.

What a difficult problem.

11. The reason a majority of people don't vote isn't because of the discourse,
If they don't register they don't have to serve on jury duty.

14. I gotta agree with RuB. This is a classic example
of why we get our asses kicked. An example of the kind of leadership we DON'T need.

We need someone who will fight back on their terms. They have set the terms, like it or not.

26. I was outside Eureka (northern) CA a couple of weeks ago
and there was a forest fire there then. I talked with a Forest Station volunteer, who said they had requested help when it first started and only got it after the fire got much, much bigger. Guess who had the contract to put it out?
Halliburton, I kid you not.
