Western Shoshone chief seeks clarification of law
Western Shoshone National Council Chief Raymond Yowell wants a federal judge to declare that his rights to land under the Treaty of Ruby Valley won't be affected by accepting money under last year's Claims Distribution Act.

Yowell's attorney, Robert Hager, filed a lawsuit Monday in U.S. District Court in Reno seeking the declaration. The United States of America and Interior Secretary Gale Norton are named as defendants.

"Because the United States intends to effect the distribution of monies ... (Yowell) desires a judicial determination of the effect ... including specifically whether acceptance ... would have any effect on (Yowell's) aboriginal land rights and treaty rights," the complaint states.

An Interior Department spokesman in Washington declined to comment on the case.

1. Smart move. Find out where you are legally so that the bush** admin
doesn't sell your land out from under your ass.

3. Thanks for posting, Mojo
I stopped reading that right-wing hack rag a long time ago, which, in Southern Nevada, leaves me with virtually no local news coverage.

6. It's more than a connection -- they own it
The Mercury has always had the feeling of being a "wannabe." They're catchy and even good on occasion, but they're still Vanilla Ice.

Hey, Mojo:
What's the weather up there like in July? Any good places to go camping in July, maybe August? I'm looking for a place with good day hiking, some trees, not too many RVs (we're car camping because my friends and I all have kids, plus we're lazy, and we're old enough to appreciate not pooping in a hole) and preferably some running water. We spent a week up in the Pioche last March (during a snow storm, much to my delight), and I fell in love with it. Your area has a lot more trees and mountains, right? Even winter sports like ice fishing and cross country skiing? Where are some good areas to check out? In the 16-17 years I've been here, Nevada had proven to be a paradise for lovers of the outdoors like me, and I'd really like to spend a week or two in your part of the state.

I believe discussing this is against the latest DU Rules set, so if you felt the urge to brag about all of the wonderful things in Northern/North Eastern Nevada, you could PM me.
