Senator says she's asked for opinions on Bush impeachment (Boxer)

Senator says she's asked for opinions on Bush impeachment

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has become the first in the Senate to raise consideration of impeachment of President George W. Bush for authorizing spying on Americans without warrants, RAW STORY has learned.

In a release issued this evening, Boxer said she's asked "four presidential scholars" for their opinion on impeachment after former White Housel counsel John Dean -- made famous by his role in revealing the Watergate tapes -- asserted that President Bush had 'admitted' to an 'impeachable offense.'

Boxer isn't the first congressmember today to float the word. Earlier today, Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) said Bush should be impeached if he broke the law in the spying program. The liberal California senator has tangled with Bush before -- earlier this year, she challenged the president's Ohio electoral votes.

51. May I suggest that you share this sentiment with Senator Boxer?
I just called the offices of my two Senators, Byrd and Rockefeller, to convey my approval and support for their courageous stand against this fascist cartel.

It really encourages them to get support in times like these, especially from constituents.

9. Bush committed high crimes by flaunting his disregard for the law
By his own public admission, Bush has claimed that he can ignore the Constitution, Congress, and the courts on the basis of being Fuehrer, i.e., Commander in Chief.

Bush and Cheney should both be impeached! Dennis Hastert will become President until elections in 2008.

I've been saying for a long time that he'll be out by August 2006. It might actually be better though if it happens in January 2007, so we can have Acting President Pelosi.

Of course he admitted to an impeachable offense.

and the nice lady answering the phone said it has not stopped ringing since Friday. I did mention impeachment and she said that people were expressing that sentiment today. :woohoo:

BTW I contact Feinstein too. Her office said that she is very concerned in light of this new information and is looking to investigate. FWIW, if you have the time call your Senators and let them know that you expect them to investigate this. I know some of you have pukes for Senators but it doesn't hurt to call them and make them pick a side (our side) NOW.

47. Well, you're all fools for believing this - will never happen
we're all over in the GD/GDP forums crying about how we'll never cast our vote for any Democrat who ever once voted against an issue we believe in and more notably the DLC democrats.

Guess what - no majority - no impeachment

It's a shame because Boxer is the woman who has the moxie to get the ball rolling. But with Frist (or his replacement) running the senate and Hasert running the House she might as well stand on her head and sing Dixie backwards for all the good it will do.

Now more than ever: DEMOCRATIC MAJORITY

My vote in 2006 isn't for Tom Carper, DLC Democrat from Delaware - it's for Harry Reid, Senate Majority Chairman

50. It's an extra incentive to get DEMOCRATS elected in 2006
We have the primaries to fight for the good democrats but when the general election comes around we need EVERYONE to vote for their democratic candidates even if they're in Connecticut and stuck with Joe Lieberman.

Surely Lieberman won't support impeaching Bush but he will support Harry Reid as the Majority Leader.

We just want the majority and we can do wonders from there. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have EARNED MY TRUST and that trust means I'll vote for my DLC senator because I want Reid & Pelosi in charge (I live in Delaware and Tom Carper, DLC Vice-Chair is up for re-election)

53. Whether or not an action is an Impeachable Offense is up to WE THE PEOPLE

Delighted that she's putting out feelers, but there is no legalistic test that defines whether or not an offense is an Impeachable offense.

As the Republicans found out, an action that may be "technically' illegal is NOT an Impeachable Offense unless the people view the action as an intolerable abuse of power.

On the other hand, if the public considers an action to be an intolerable abuse of power, that action is an Impeachable Offense, whether or not it is a violation of written law.

If the electorate demanded Impeachment for "negligent, stupid, mismanagement of a war", then Bush and Cheney could be charged with that “high crime” in the Articles of Impeachment.

It's all about political will. And political will is driven by citizen action. It is up to us.

Our representatives can look to the law for guidance, but they are not limited by the letter of the law. They can look to past Impeachments, but they are not bound by precedence. No "technical' interpretation of the law can trump the will of the people.

Demanding Impeachment is a short hand for all the stages. The first step is an Impeachment Inquiry. Clearly, we have sufficient evidence of wrong-doing to demand an Impeachment Inquiry.

Bush and Cheney have given us much to choose from. They have done things that are prohibited by law (malum prohibitum -- e.g., violating our laws against torture and laws against warrantless domestic spying). They have also committed offenses that are wrong on their face (malum in se -- e.g., "Lying a nation into war," "making boom threats" and "terrorizing the American people with threats of a mushroom cloud in 45 minutes."

There is no doubt that we have cause to move forward, even if all we look no farther than the information already in the public domain (e.g. the documents and analysis in Hoodwinked provide the grounds for a dozen articles).
