Talk radio gives powerful voice to Katrina anger

By Stuart Grudgings Thu Feb 16, 1:14 PM ET

BATON ROUGE (Reuters) - Something is rotten in the state of Louisiana and John from New Orleans' Metairie suburb thinks he knows what it is.

"The same people are protecting the same power and money," he raged. "We have no statesmen in this state -- none!"

Charlie, another morning caller to WWL-AM talk radio, agreed: "I encourage everybody to just vote everyone out."

When Hurricane Katrina struck in August, knocking out television, phones, and computers, it was old-fashioned AM radio that kept thousands of flood-stranded people in New Orleans connected and even saved lives.

Nearly six months on, it has turned from emergency rescue service into a powerful voice of frustration at the slow pace of recovery from the disaster and the perception that federal and state politicians have let residents down.

1. Once again, the Right is hoist with its own petard
Once the protected preserve of hatemongers like Rushbo, talk radio has become a "powerful voice", not for the pompous bloviators but for the dispossessed.

Oh, the irony!

2. Um, Metairie is where David Dukkke lives
and from where he once got elected to the La. legislature. John from Metairie most likely wants to vote "everyone" out so long as they're Dems like Blanco or Landrieu.

4. You've gotten your people mixed up
John was complaining about power and money being protected at the expense of everyone else. It was Charlie who wanted to vote everyone out, but there was no indication that he was a Klansman or even a conservative. Garland Robinette, the radio host, is a Cajun, and there are more libbruls among 'em than neo-cons.

I used to work with a woman from Metairie. She would complain about its conservatism -- but she, and her husband, and most of the rest of her family were liberal Democrats. Granted, this awas nearly 20 years ago, but I don't think that the area has changed that much.

Katrina's not the only sea change that's happening in the Southland. While this is no time to slack off, I do believe things are starting to turn Left. Let's give them all the encouragement they need.

As for David Duke, there's only one word right now I can imagine using to describe him: laughingstock.
