Brussels - The International Federation of Journalists on Thursday warned that escalating violence in Iraq was forcing local and international media to go into hiding, threatening proper coverage of events in the country.

'We are witnessing a catastrophe for journalism as media organisations are forced to pull their people off the streets,' said Aidan White, IFJ General Secretary.

'It is impossible to have independent coverage when media staff are being gunned down in this brutal conflict,' White said. The IFJ represents around 500,000 journalists' groups in more than 100 countries.

The organization made its comments after gunmen on Wednesday kidnapped and killed a correspondent for al-Arabiya television and two members of her crew in Iraq.
