Shays says he intends to vote for Lieberman
Shays says he intends to vote for Lieberman
February 28, 2006, 10:10 PM EST

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Republican Congressman Christopher Shays said Tuesday that he plans to vote this year for Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman and encouraged other GOP officials to endorse the three-term senator.

Shays, R-4th District, made the remarks in an interview with the editorial board of The Advocate of Stamford, which did not immediately report his comments. The Hartford Courant reported Shay's support of Lieberman on its Web site Tuesday night. Both papers are owned by Tribune Co.

Republicans have been gauging support for the idea of a cross-endorsement of Lieberman among several GOP candidates, including Gov. M. Jodi Rell and Connecticut U.S. Reps. Rob Simmons and Nancy L. Johnson.

But spokesmen for top Republicans said Tuesday evening that GOP officials were not supporting Lieberman.

6. Shays made some horrible remarks to one of the Katrina victims testifying
under the auspices of Rep. McKinney. I think that the vid is still up on MSNBC that I linked to from Bellacio who has had very good articles on the Katrina tragedy and Rep. McKinney reprinted her House Speech calling for the Impeachment of Bush which was erased from Senate log. Shays called one of the witnesses a liar for saying they were in Concentration Camps with armed guards, behind fences with bugs and dirty mattresses. He browbeat these poor witnesses, one cried, one yelled. Very instructive, if repulsive watching the "new" Congressional bullies.

Rep. McKinney is unbelievably courageous and I wish she would be invited to write an article for DU. She has to go to Bellacio and Prison Planet because not only do the msm ignore her but also the liberal blogs. Rep. McKinney had a different take on the Dems boycotting the Katrina Hearings.

8. a lot of possibilites as to the why.
One possibility - in a fairly liberal state - repub office holders have to be concerned about the far past dissatisfaction moving towards distaste drifting towards disgust with the administration and the GOP in congress. So how do they appear more "independent" from bushco - so that they can be reelected?

Well if they believe it is a given that the senate seat will stay dem. - then they can a) try to get a friendly (to their business/gop bent part of the party) senator while b) giving an appearance that they are more aligned with "Connecticut's interests" than with the WH as a distancing/self-promotion for reelection move.

9. And Democrats should support Ned Lamont against Lieberman
in the primary.

The GOP and their allies in the DLC are the only ones that love Lieberman. Let's reject this piece of rotten meat!

13. Hannity, then Shays--of course, Palpatine supports illegal war, illegal
wiretaps, and everything Chimpy wants. And anyone who disagrees is destroying the party and has to be kicked out of the clubhouse, of course.

14. He's facing a strong candidate and must move to center.
He's sort of moderate but an ENABLER. His being in office enables the Republicans to run a corrupt government. Is the American public smart enough to vote out moderate pukes so that Dems can control the House or Senate?

16. Are you implying the Joe is "center" FUNNY. He's a GOP plant.
Quit pretending he works for anyone but the GOP...and maybe Israel.

17. I'm not "implying" Joe is anything. And quite frankly, compared
to right wing Republicans, Lieberman is center. Abortion, environment, workers rights, the Republicans hate him. And don't accuse me of being a Joe lover; I dislike the man's politics more than anyone else I know. I'm still pissed he ran for the Senate at the same time he ran for VP. If Florida could design a decent ballot, or if Jeb didn't succeed in disenfranchising (sp?) thousands of voters Gore would have been Pres with Lieberman as VP. At that time the Republican Gov. of CT would have appointed a Republican Senator to replace Lieberman giving the Republicans the majority in the Senate. But Joe had to be a selfish asshole, thinking about himself more than the people of the State and this country. Why don't you "quit" pretending to know something and go read a book.
