Saddam asks: ‘Where is the crime?’
“Where is the crime? Where is the crime?” Saddam asked, standing before the panel of five judges.

“If trying a suspect accused of shooting at a head of state — no matter what his name is — is considered a crime, then you have the head of state in your hands.

The 148 people eventually sentenced to death in the case included at least 10 juveniles, one as young as 11, according to the documents.

His dramatic courtroom speech came a day after prosecutors in his trial presented a presidential decree with a signature they said was Saddam’s approving death sentences for the 148 Shiites, their most direct evidence against him so far in the four-month trial.

2. I'm sure his hands are bloody re: that event. The question to ask, though,
is why is *this* particular incident being brought up to try Saddam?

Would it be because other events would involve US complicity and this would give them an easy way to a death sentence and kill Saddam before the other "crimes" are revealed?

5. Yes that is exactly why this was the first one
Once he is convicted there will little attention paid to the other trials wherein some of those dirtybits might be mentioned.

3. Good question...
To bad Saddam can't get certain London Appeals judges to suggest his medical problems should stay him from the hassles of standing trial for 'crimes against humanity'.

BUT--he still has a point...jurisdictions everywhere clampdown violently on coup attempts, jails and executes dissidents and generally don't like people shooting at dictators/leaders/politicians.

Since we westerners and our governments generally have taken a blind eye to all of this, seems rather pointless to pursue it now.--

If they want to kill the guy, just do it.

That is something Saddam would have a hard time arguing against, no?

4. Just like Bush says,
"If the president does it, it's not illegal."

Maybe he can make Alberto Gonzales part of his defense team.

8. Didn't Bush sign a WHOLE bunch of 'Death Warrants' for people
he considered 'criminals' during his tenure as Governor of Texas? Gleefully?
I realize Saddam is no choirboy, but this court is so 'kangaroo' it should be moved to Australia.

Saddam admits to reprisals following assassination attempt

Big News Network.com

/snip/

Iraq's ousted president Saddam Hussein has acknowledged that he ordered the trial of Shi'ite villagers who eventually were executed after an attempt on his life.

Saddam told a Baghdad court Wednesday, that he also ordered the confiscation of farmlands belonging to those villagers.

/snip/

The crackdown on Shi'ites from Dujail occurred after villagers attacked Saddam's motorcade as it passed through the town.

The ousted leader and his co-defendants, former officials in his government, face death if convicted.

LINK

doesn't "ousted" mean to be displaced by another political party, when in reality he was captured after his country was INVADED?

And so when will Junior admit that his slaughter of tens of thousands of Iraqis is largely due to "he tried to kill my daddy"???

15. How 'bout shortening that statement
.
.
.

"Bush has neither conviction nor presence of mind" - PERIOD

Junior is just the PNACer's "poodle" if'n ya like

"daddy's boy"

George W is not a "real" person , just an image for the electorates consumption

And generations of "Bush Billions of Bucks" behind him.

Take his money away, his connections - he'd have a hard time getting a job as a greeter at Wal-Mart methinks . . .

But that's just My Canuk Opinion . . .
