WASHINGTON, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Harry Browne, best-selling author and two-time Libertarian Party presidential nominee, died in his home in Franklin, Tennessee, Wednesday night, March 1, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife Pamela and his daughter Autumn. He was 72.

Harry was my sister's ex-husband's brother. I've known him since I was 12, when he took the time at holidays to totally charm me. I hadn't seen him in years but began email correspondence with him in 2003. We disagreed on many things, but he was so articulate, charming and intelligent. My niece and nephew are also his, so I knew he was very very sick. Poor Harry.

It began in December of 2002. Before we invaded Iraq, but it was imminent. I'd forgotten that.

8. Around 1980...

..... my mother in law (of my first wife, she was a librarian) gave me a book "How I Found Freedom in an UnFree World". It was written by Harry Browne, and at the time I had no real interest in politics and little understanding of how the world worked.

It was pretty much a Libertarian manifesto, full of explanations as to why unions were unnecessary and bad, and how government stuck its nose way too deep into the business affairs of men.

One of its main prescriptions was to basically ignore the law and do whatever, the theory being that the chances of getting caught lying about your taxes or pulling various other little business/tax frauds was very low. Thankfully, I'm not that kind of person and I ignored his advice.

I have to admit that at the time some of his ideas were pretty seductive. I still retain a basic fondness for the "ideals" of Libertarianism, that government should do the minimum necessary. the problem is in defining what is "necessary". Because human nature is what it is, it will always be necessary for a Democratic government to level the playing field a bit economically, or the concentration of wealth and power will become toxic. Oh, it already has. Too bad.

I really respected Browne. He represented what conservatives used to believe before the movement was hijacked by insane people.

10. A libertarian small, limited government

No military industrial complex, no corporate welfare. I left the Libertarian Party because I no longer believe that capitalism and libertarianism are compatible, but I still believe that someone like Harry Browne would have made a better president than the bloodthirsty power mongers we currently have. And yes, I voted for him in 2000. I may no longer be a capitalist, but I'm still a libertarian to the core.
