LAT: Dozens of New O.C. Democrats Were Signed Up as Republicans
From the Los Angeles Times

Dozens of New O.C. Democrats Were Signed Up as Republicans

Registrar will turn over 100 cases of improper registration for possible prosecution. The GOP practice of paying for new voters is blamed.
By Jean O. Pasco
Times Staff Writer

March 2, 2006

Orange County election officials said Wednesday they were preparing to turn over 100 instances of improper voter registration for possible criminal prosecution.

Included are three dozen complaints of Democrats being signed up as Republicans in one of the county's most competitive legislative districts.

Most of the examples being handed over to the district attorney's office emerged from a routine review by county officials, but Democrats independently found others.

(snip)

At issue is a GOP registration effort that began two years ago, said county GOP Chairman Scott Baugh. The Republican Party has paid bounties of up to $10 for each new voter, hoping to make the central county friendlier turf for GOP candidates.

2. They can't do anything honestly , can they?
"Bounties", such a sanitized word for "bribes", isn't it?

3.  "When bounties are involved, this kind of thing happens"
Are the bounties themselves not illegal?

The Republican Party is the number-one criminal organization in the world.

7. the rethugs around here
are real sweeties. The slimeball that is currently the mayor of Anaheim, a few years ago, hired rent-a-cops, supplied w/ badges (we don't need no steeking badges) 2 stand outside heavily Latino polling places. It worked like a charm. The Latino vote was surpressed through intimidation!

Rethugs practically own the county and STILL they cheat!

12. And with such an Arian face (Anaheim Mayor, that is)
Yes, I know. We are not supposed to stereotype based on appearance, yet, too many pugs in Orange County do have Arian faces..

8. But is this such a bad thing, I mean, if you ignore the bribes...
...for just a moment, if they sign up a bunch of Democrats as Republicans, they are still going to vote for Democrats, most likely.

So what happens, the over-confident ReThug see's all these "republicans" voting for the Democrat!

Is that so bad?

10. Would Folks be locked out of primaries or have to vote in the repub
primary - if frustrated and discouraged (assuming new registration = new voter) and possibly not vote in the GE?

14. I've never voted in California, but in Georgia, you choose at the poll.
Like back in 2000 when Al Gore had the race wrapped up against Bradly, but John McCain was still giving George W. Bush troubles, so I voted for McCain in the Republican Primary.

That was a really weird feeling, but not uncommon here (plus it gave me another chance to vote AGAINST Bush).

17. At one time California was playing with open primaries
So I voted for the pug who was the weakest challenger to Barbara Boxer who, of course, was unopposed in the primaries.

19. I believe they would not be able to vote in the Democratic primaries,
you are right. I would hope, though, that their frustration might ensure their vote in the GE, instead of discouraging it... but one never knows.

20. I wouldn't want hostile people voting in my primary.
They might all get together and nominate Otto the Bus Driver or somebody.

11. There are a few things that happen with this
First of all, they are registered as Republicans
They will vote in the repug primary.

They will have their name on the registration rolls as repugs and get repug literature, not dem stuff.

They will not be able to sign petitions for Dems to get on ballots for office, because they are registered as repugs.

Repug central committees and candidates, along with the RNC will spend money and time in this area thinking it is a heavy repug and go after what they feel is the sure vote. Dems will see it as a heavy repug area and stay away, go after a more purple or blue area..

What eventually happens is they hear the repug view, they get repug literature, they get nothing from dems and they eventually switch teams or feel that the dems are dead in the area. They then get it reinforced by Sean Hannity and Rush that the repugs are the only viable party, or they get told by Brit Hume that only repugs are happy. I think it is called the "island syndrome" it is well documented. If you are in a room with other people and they argue that 1 + 1 = 5, and nobody is there to back you up, you will eventually say 1+1=5 too. If nobody is there to give a dem message, you will eventually come around to a repug way of thinking. It is just a matter of time, but it will happen. If you live in a blue area, work the repugs and bring them around, if you live in a red area do some outreach to the dems and keep them on the team.

13. not to mention electronic voting machines will suport heavy Repuke regis.
When the "analysts" go back to look for a justification for results that defy logic, they'll note that there was a huge increase in Repuke registrations, hence the surprising results that put the Terminator in for another term, etc.....

15. I'm sure you would know better than I, because I never voted in California
...but what happened here is, I get both the Democrat Junk mail and the Republican Junk mail, it all gos in the trash or the shredder.

I did get more Republican Junk mail after I voted for John McCain in the 2000 primary (see post above for a further explanation), the Democratic Junk mail didn't just stop coming, and I'm sure most people know that the ReThugs have more money, so they send more Junk mail.

Plus, I did get some "for Republican eyes only" type mail too, we had fun with that here, at DU.

25. I get repug junk also
I am constantly getting things to support our greatest leaders legacy, Ronald Reagan ranch. I have come across many Dems in this area who thought they were the only ones. We now have an Air America affiliate so that is helping.

21. Easier to steal these votes.
No one would look for registered Republicans voting Republican right? Nothing to see here, move along.
But a big Democratic swing to Republican votes would get noticed, and possibly investigated.

23. One more reason why EARLY VOTING
with pen and paper is the only way to go.

Keep in mind Kerry won the EV in FL and when you have to vote in person it's a lot harder to cheat.

27. I had an interesting experience in FL changing my votor registration...
Edited on Sat Mar-04-06 01:42 AM by bedazzled
My husband and I went at the same time to change our licenses from NJ to FL. They asked if we wanted to register to vote, and we did. My husband went first, and stated he was a Republican. They just processed his application. I said I was a Democrat, and they asked me a whole series of questions as to whether I had any driving violations or criminal convictions. It certainly wasn't because of the way I look, as I look like (and AM!) somebody's dear ole mom....

I am waiting to see if my husband gets his voting card, and I never get mine...It wouldn't surprise me if all of the Democratic registrations are thrown away. Call it a science experiment.

28. Register as an Independent
especially moving from a Blue State. They'll be very nice to you. Keep them guessing. They need your votes, even if you really do feel that hell could freeze over before you will ever vote Republican.

If they can be so devious, so can YOU.
