WEST NORRITON - Republican gubernatorial candidate and former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann told a roomful of Montgomery County Republicans that the "goal is to win today and to win now."

"I'm not looking to be the poster child for the Republican Party," said Swann, who made history by becoming the first black Pennsylvanian to be the endorsed Republican candidate for governor. "Well, damn - it's about time."

Pennsylvania is ready for change, said Swann, who promised "real solutions," though he said neither what they would be nor what problems they would solve. But his upbeat message brought the crowd to it's feet.

1) Aren't "winning today" and "winning now" kind of, um, the same thing? Duh.

2) "I'm not looking to be the poster child for the Republican Party...Well, damn - it's about time." Say what? Took a few too many shots to the head in your football days, did you? What gibberish!

3) "Brought the crowd to it's feet?" Here's a newspaper in a town / suburban area of over 100,000 and its writers can't even use apostrophes correctly.

Like it or not, he's a political threat. The democratic strongholds in PA are Pittsburgh and Philly. Eddy gets Philly, by a landslide. However, if he does NOT get Pittsburgh he's out, as the rest of the state is pretty heavy repub. The city of Pittsburgh is ground zero for this election for a big swing state that barely went for Kerry in 2004.

If fast Eddie can carry the five-county Philly area plus Allentown he will win (even if Pittsburgh is a draw). More Repubs in Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Bucks, Lehigh and Northampton counties than all the other red counties on the map. Rendel won or split these counties last election; he carried the state last time winning only a dozen or so counties out of 67. Most of the Philly counties are pro-choice/fiscal conservative, not the bible thumpers you see in Lancaster and SC PA. The only reason Ed won't win by a landslide is he is from Philly; face it most of PA hates Philly. Swann's biggest problem is wooing the SE repubs, if he mentions the Steelers once on this side of the state he's going to loose a lot of votes. The other negative is a sad one that I hate to admit in this day of age, but do you really think the true red-meat republican's in PA will pull the lever for an african american? Yea, that borders on ugly racism, but I'm not sure what their reaction will be in the fall given the primary is pretty much decided. We may get a hint if the anti-legislature vote actually shows up in the May primary. This movement is strongest in the rural and western parts of the state (where Swann needs the votes in the fall). If Swann doesn't get >90% of the primary votes in these counties, then he's in trouble this fall.

Here in Illinois, before the Alan Keyes campaign comedy, I had a brief discussion about the race with a 'guy off the street' (so to speak). Without all of the details, I had just been introduced and the topic was actually small talk. It was either going to be that, or the weather. LOL!

Whether Ditka was going to jump into the race was all over the news that day. It was the same week that he was going to be meeting with GOP committee to discuss details. I asked this guy if he'd vote for Ditka. His response: "Da Coach? Hell, yes! Who wouldn't vote for Da Coach?"
