Phoenix, Arizona (AHN) - A man who has a criminal past in explosives and illegal silencers is being indicted on charges of attempting to produce a biological weapon.
Authorities searched Denys Ray Hughes’ apartment and discovered a large amount of castor bean plants, which are used to make ricin. Law enforcement officers believe Hughes is tied to a terrorist organization and is not working alone.
Just last month a jury indicted Hughes on illegal weapons and explosives charges.
Ricin is a poisonous protein that can be used as a biological weapon.
If convicted of the charges, Hughes is looking at length stay in prison; the biological weapon charge alone carries a life term. And he’s looking at 20 years for each of the four silencers and each of the two pipe bombs authorities found.
