California Proposes Altering Lethal Injection to Include Steady IV Drip of Sedative

By DAVID KRAVETS

SAN FRANCISCO Mar 3, 2006 (AP)— The state of California has proposed altering the amount of life-ending drugs to be used in executions and would continually drip a sedative into prisoners to make sure they don't become conscious during the process, prosecutors said Friday.

California's chief death penalty prosecutor, Dane Gillette, said at a hearing that the changes would ensure that a prisoner "would not experience wanton or unnecessary pain."

U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel didn't say whether he would approve of the new method.

The proposal responds to a lawsuit brought by Michael Morales, who was scheduled to be executed Feb. 21. The injection was canceled and the state's capital punishment system left in legal limbo after San Quentin State Prison could not comply with Fogel's order for changes to ensure Morales would not feel too much pain.

1. Since the fundies are so fond of the death penalty...
why can't they just form a prayer circle around the condemned prisoner and ask God to kill him?

4. This complexity process eludes me
Why not just give them a massive dose of fentanyl or its analogue wildnil. 10mg sedates a 7 ton elephant, instantly fatal in human. CNS failure and hypoxic brain death.

No pain just death.

IMHO people should be gassed with narcotic anesthetics rather than cyanide. Use the same chamber and a lethal dose of anesthetic. Inmate does not even feel a needle prick.

7. You're right. It could all be handled long distance.
Rev. Pat Robertson could tell God to zap him, and Frist could determine the time of death.

8. I heard somewhere that hanging...
...is the most humane way to execute someone if done correctly, the problem is that it usually isn't done correctly.

9. Kind of
but it is a spectacle, thus unusual.

The most effective way to kill a condemned person is with anesthetic in massive dose.

fentanyl and potassium chloride (if they wanted to be extra sure) is quick and painless.

State might take a new look at lethal injection
Execution method being challenged across nation

By TRACY JOHNSON
P-I REPORTER

A decade ago, when Washington lawmakers made lethal injection the primary way to execute convicted killers, it was considered less barbaric than hanging and less likely to bring long, costly appeals.

The state Supreme Court has called lethal injection "undoubtedly constitutional" and said that ruling otherwise would be "tantamount to forbidding the death penalty altogether."

But now, as death row inmates in other states claim it's cruel punishment because it may not bring a peaceful death as once believed, some attorneys say Washington courts will likely have to take another look at the method
