Pentagon Releases Names of Gitmo Inmates (not in full)
GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - Offering a glimpse into the top-secret world of Guantanamo Bay, the Pentagon has released the names and home countries of many detainees who have been held at the isolated military prison for up to four years.

A Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by The Associated Press forced the Department of Defense on Friday afternoon to turn over some 5,000 pages of transcripts from closed-door hearings on the detainees, most of whom were accused of having links to the Taliban or al-Qaida.

While the Pentagon has not provided the full roster of detainees, the transcripts give the most detailed picture to date of who has been held at the prison on a U.S. base in eastern Cuba, which has become the focus of international criticism in part because of the government's shroud of secrecy.

Jamie Fellner, director of the U.S. program for Human Rights Watch, said the disclosure represents a "major breach" in that secrecy.

1. Help stop torture, please.
Please join me in demanding the truth about torture and accountability for past acts, so that torture in our names never happens again. http://www.tellthetruthabouttorture.org

=Our campaign to stop U.S. acts of torture is gaining momentum. Over 40,000 people of conscience like you and I have declared that torture is NOT one of our values. We've relentlessly spread our message of truth and accountability across Washington D.C. we've demanded the President tell the truth about torture and be accountable for past acts. We've insisted our leaders in Congress outlaw the practice of kidnapping people and sending them to countries like Syria, Jordan and Egypt where they are tortured.

We've plastered our anti-torture message on our billboard truck, which roved from the Capitol Hill steps to the White House lawn for 5 days.

Amnesty has never faltered in our defense of truth and justice. And we're not going to back down now. With your help, we're going to take our message to cities and towns all across the United States. We've learned from over 40 years of hands-on, grassroots experience that movements like these get started when people like you and me reach out to friends and neighbors - over dinner tables, in classrooms, and in offices...

But we need you to help fund this fight. Here's the plan and how your gift will help:

1. We've created a web ad that illustrates how we are all connected to acts of torture. We plan to run this video on political web sites regardless of party lines. Torture is not partisan and we must reach as many people who won't stand for torture as possible.

2. Amnesty activists will spread our collective anti-torture message across the country by organizing anti-torture events, community forums and teach-ins. We'll go to houses of worship. We'll go to schools. We'll go to community centers. We'll be heard.

3. Amnesty International will continue to lobby Congress and demand that the outsourcing of torture be outlawed.

help us get our message out. Every donation - $15, $25, $50 - helps. Every donation - no matter the size - will help us build momentum and stop the torture. Thank you in advance for your commitment to stopping torture.

5. Your link goes to a site selling bondage equipment
The correct site is www.CagePrisoners.com - in the plural. You've made this mistake several times over the past month, eg http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=454072&mesg_id=454131 ,though you have got it right sometimes.

3.  Partial list of Guantanamo detainees released
Partial list of Guantanamo detainees released

March 04 2006 at 11:54AM

By Will Dunham

Washington - The Pentagon released under court order on Friday a partial listing of names and nationalities of the nearly 500 foreign terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay, but withheld data on the rest.

Starting with the arrival from Afghanistan of the first group of 20 shackled and masked detainees on January 11, 2002, the United States has never released the names and nationalities of all the prisoners at the controversial camp.
(snip)

The Pentagon released at 6.40pm (23h40 GMT) on Friday more than 5 000 pages of documents relating to hearings conducted at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, by military panels reviewing the cases of detainees.
(snip)

Only 10 of the detainees at Guantanamo have been charged with a crime, and human rights activists have condemned the indefinite detentions and the prisoners' lack of legal rights. United Nations rights investigators have called for the closure of the prison.
(snip)

Asked why the Pentagon did not release a complete list, Whitman said, "There is a concern that there could be potential harm to the detainees if personal information such as their name was a matter of public record."

4. "a federal judge rejected arguments by the administration...
...of President Bush that releasing names, home countries and other information would violate the detainees' privacy and could endanger them and their families."

i remember that one. their defence got pretty silly towards the end. iirc, their first claim was the usual 'national security' one which then became a sudden concern for the detainees well-being. laughable of course, but typical of bushco.

and there is this bit, more childish games, more evidence of the petty nature of this administration: "A Pentagon lawyer delivered the documents — 60 files on a CD-ROM — about 20 minutes after the deadline at the close of business Friday. But within minutes, an officer returned and took back the CD-ROM, which contained letters from relatives of some of the prisoners that were not intended for release. A new version was provided over an hour later."

and i've gotta wonder who it is they aren't talking about. the minors is my guess.
