Pentagon Releases Names of Gitmo Inmates (not in full)

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - Offering a glimpse into the top-secret world of Guantanamo Bay, the Pentagon has released the names and home countries of many detainees who have been held at the isolated military prison for up to four years.

A Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by The Associated Press forced the Department of Defense on Friday afternoon to turn over some 5,000 pages of transcripts from closed-door hearings on the detainees, most of whom were accused of having links to the Taliban or al-Qaida.

While the Pentagon has not provided the full roster of detainees, the transcripts give the most detailed picture to date of who has been held at the prison on a U.S. base in eastern Cuba, which has become the focus of international criticism in part because of the government's shroud of secrecy.

Jamie Fellner, director of the U.S. program for Human Rights Watch, said the disclosure represents a "major breach" in that secrecy.

Washington - The Pentagon released under court order on Friday a partial listing of names and nationalities of the nearly 500 foreign terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay, but withheld data on the rest.

Starting with the arrival from Afghanistan of the first group of 20 shackled and masked detainees on January 11, 2002, the United States has never released the names and nationalities of all the prisoners at the controversial camp.

i remember that one. their defence got pretty silly towards the end. iirc, their first claim was the usual 'national security' one which then became a sudden concern for the detainees well-being. laughable of course, but typical of bushco.

and there is this bit, more childish games, more evidence of the petty nature of this administration: "A Pentagon lawyer delivered the documents — 60 files on a CD-ROM — about 20 minutes after the deadline at the close of business Friday. But within minutes, an officer returned and took back the CD-ROM, which contained letters from relatives of some of the prisoners that were not intended for release. A new version was provided over an hour later."

and i've gotta wonder who it is they aren't talking about. the minors is my guess.
