Arab League to open office in Iraq

The Arab League will open offices in Iraq for the first time since the 2003 US-led invasion.

It is part of the league's efforts to help reconcile the country's sharply divided Sunni Arab, Shiite and Kurdish communities.

The representation office would represent an increased level of engagement by the Arab League, which largely avoided involvement in Iraq's efforts until late last year.

The United States has been seeking greater Arab involvement in Iraq, hoping to give legitimacy to the current government.

1. This is excellent news

In November, their were stories of the AL's ideas for resolving Iraq. At the time, they thought the US should leave completely in roughly a year. Various people, Kerry for one, have said for the last year that this type of diplomatic solution is what is needes - and that Bush hasn't done enough to foster it. It may be that a solution that doesn't involve the US is best now.
