Cdn. soldier injured in axe attack in Afghanistan
A Canadian soldier in Afghanistan is in critical but stable condition after being attacked by a man wielding an axe during a meeting with tribal elders today.

The reservist soldier, Lieutenant Trevor Greene, of Vancouver was initially taken to the Canadian-led multinational hospital at Kandahar airfield where he underwent treatment for head wounds. He will now be airlifted to the U.S. medical facility in Landstuhl, Germany, said CTV's Steve Chao, in Kandahar.

It was later learned that Greene was attacked during a sit-down meeting with tribal elders when a man struck him in the back of the neck with an axe.

"At this moment Lt. Trevor Greene is in hospital here at the Kandahar Airfield Base. He is critical condition, in rough shape. He was unconscious the last time we checked."

2. Good God, Almighty
How sick and sad is that. I prey for his full recovery and that they don't send him back when he does recover. That's just awful.

From the posted Link:

Ominous sign

Here was one ominous sign that no one picked up on, Schamuhn said: "About two or three minutes prior to the incident, all the children that were present were escorted away, twenty to thirty metres away. We were completely vulnerable to them and they took full advantage of that."

Once the attack on Green happened, Schamuhn said: "There was a whole bunch of explosions and a pretty heavy volume of fire. It turns out we were under fire from the south of the river, which is on the adjacent bank."

/snip/

After the firefight, Afghan and Canadian soldiers found all fighting-age men vanished from the village. All they found were old men, women and children.

Even the leaders -- who had welcomed them with blankets, breads and meats -- disappeared.

Damn whomever in our Canuk leadership made our troops jump the fence from peacekeepers to participants in this invasion of Afghanistan.

There is no NEED for us Canuks to be there. The US has 130,000 plus troops in Iraq, which was NOT a concern to stability in the region UNTIL the USA invaded.

The only reason I can see that we are there in Afghanistan is that the USA Admin pressured the right in our country to participate, attempting to glean some global decency by having us "peace-luving" Canuks involved.

But we've "jumped the fence" in my opinion - and are obviously losing our distinction as peacekeepers -

prostituting ourselves for the benefit of the PNACers

NOT a good sign

(sigh)

5. You make good points
My heart goes out to the soldier. I hope he makes it and a family in Canada doesn't suffer his loss.
