BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Gunmen dressed as Iraqi police commandos attacked a Sunni mosque in a western Baghdad neighborhood late Saturday, killing three mosque guards and wounding six others in an hour-long gunfight, police said.
An official with Baghdad emergency police said the attack occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time at the al-Noor Sunni mosque in the predominantly Sunni neighborhood of Al-Jihad in western Baghdad.
The attackers and mosque guards exchanged gunfire for about an hour, with people in the neighborhood rushing to help the guardsmen battle their attackers, the official said.
The attack is just the latest in the string of sectarian violence that has erupted since the February 22 bombing of the Al-Askariya Mosque -- one of the holiest shrines for Shia Muslims.

Three killed in mosque attack, imam blames Interior Ministry
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) _ Three people died when gunmen stormed a Sunni mosque in west Baghdad early today in a 25-minute gunbattle.
U-S forces blocked off the area after the exchange of fire.
Police initially reported the mosque imam had been killed but it turns out he was not hurt. Police say attackers hit the al-Nour (ahl-NOOR') mosque in Baghdad's Jihad neighborhood and fought with mosque guards.
Several masked gunmen are guarding the mosque today and damage is visible.
The imam tells reporters that "a gang using ten cars stormed the mosque." He says the cars are like those used by Iraq's Interior Ministry and the attackers wore military uniforms.
