U.S. attorney removes self from case
Forrest County sheriff charged with commandeering 2 ice trucks

From staff and wire reports

HATTIESBURG — The U.S. attorney's office has removed itself from the misdemeanor case against Forrest County Sheriff Billy McGee, accused of commandeering two ice trucks Sept. 4 following Hurricane Katrina.

McGee, 53, said his attorney, Jim Dukes, received a notice saying U.S. Attorney Dunn Lampton had removed himself from the case. The move is expected to further delay the case.

Lampton could not be reached Saturday for comment.

"I have no idea until the government notifies me of another court date or another hearing of some type," McGee said Friday.

It looks like they thought better of making a martyr of the only person with common sense in the state of Mississippi.

2. There's a more important matter to investigate
Edited on Sun Mar-05-06 09:18 AM by lwfern
a National Guard soldier who attempted to stop the ice trucks from leaving the Federal Emergency Management Agency site was handcuffed, brought to the Sheriff's Department and cited for interfering.

Who gave the soldier orders to prevent the ice from being delivered? Where was the ice scheduled to go instead of the relief center?

3. The Ice was supposed to be shipped to Portland Maine
and stored in the refrigerated warehouse of one of Poppy's friends.

4. It might have been better not to prosecute to
call more attention to that fact.
