Army of recruiters invades city highs (Large HS with So-So Students)

The U.S. military is most successful recruiting city students from super-sized high schools with mediocre graduation rates and tight security, a Daily News analysis has found.

Twenty students at Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx enlisted in the Army during the last academic year, more than any other public school in the five boroughs, according to data obtained by The News.

"A lot of kids here prefer military over college because their parents can't pay for college," said Vallin Hickson, a senior at Pelham Prep, one of five schools housed in Columbus High.

The public high schools that deliver the most recruits to the military are not among the city's best – or worst.

Those schools are academically average and strikingly similar: Most enroll about 4,000 students and are located in ethnically and economically diverse neighborhoods. The dropout rates are better than the citywide average of 16%; more than half of seniors pass state exams and school safety agents swarm the hallways.

1. Sounds like a de facto draft to me.
The government yanks back education funding, then the kids have no place to go except the military. Sounds like a bush plan to me.

4. Learn a TRADE
Given the way this country is going, forget college. Learn a skilled blue collar trade. Your car or your toilet bowl cannot be outscourced to India.

You won't end up DEAD fixing a transmission.

7. I am inclined to agree, but......
If you notice, even those areas are being taken over by illegals. Look at new home construction. Even areas like plumbing can be in trouble since a person with average skills can learn how to replace or fix a leaky faucet.....

5. There outta be a law
That requires military recruiters to spend equal time in affluent and working class neighborhood high schools.

I don't care if the recruiters are successful or not in a rich high school. That's what the law should be. The military making their enlistment quota is not very important to me anyway.

10. I sort of agree with you. ..
but the law should be no quotas for recruiters. Then they would be free to visit schools equally or sit in their offices waiting for potential recruits to visit them.

11. That is the logic behind a draft: make sure all social classes
serve equally. But of course the draft can be evaded: Just ask Cheney and Bush.

8. The repukes are trying as hard as they can to...
to make economic conditions bad enough that the military, even with the risk of getting killed is looked at as the only ticket to a middle class lifestyle.
