US Senate Candidate Wants Death Penalty for Homosexuals (Ohio)
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 10:16 AM by LiberalHeart
TOLEDO -- Merrill Keiser, Jr., is a trucker by trade, and he's hoping his next journey takes him all the way to Washington. His goal is a seat in the US Senate, but first he has to make it through the primary that will determine which Ohio Democrat will be the November ballot.

There's also a link to a video interview with this guy. I don't know how to link directly to the video, but you can find it at wtol.com

on our side of the ticket to make US look like the insane bigots?

Since I don't know any real Democrats that are even against Gay Marriage let alone wants to put them to death I can only accept this guy as part of the Republican party's bigoted infrastructure.

They sure do play dirty. Scumbags.

Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 03:05 PM by tblue37
He has run for office as a Dem. He was also an early and vociferous supporter of the Civil Rights movement.

But he's a total nut where homosexuality is concerned.

Just because someone registers (or even runs) as a Democrat, that doesn't guarantee that he is sane.

103. This may very well not be true, but
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 04:17 PM by FVZA_Colonel
I do remember reading an article that mentioned his views on evolution, which brought forth the idea that he was opposed to it not necessarily because of the scientific theory of evolution, but Social Darwinism, which (in the author's opinion) had unfortunately colored the man's opinion on Darwinism as a whole, due to his rejection of any ideology that posited that some people were inherrently better than others, and therefore more morally deserving of the goods of the world; in short, Bryan "threw the baby out with the bath water" when it came to evolutionm, if you will.

As I said, it could very well not be true, but I thought it would be interesting to mention.

11. This may be the "stategery"
http://www.ohio.com/mld/beaconjournal/news/state/13983669.htm

See last 4 paragraphs (this story is about the infamous Tom Noe, the rare coin dealer in Ohio who is all tied up in GOP politics in the state and all the way to the WH). Could this be the strategy at work here in this guy running for office? Here's the pertinent part:

In the lawsuit, Noe makes no secret of his dislike of Democrats and the lengths he's gone over the years to force them from office.

He eagerly describes several of his favorite tactics, including splitting Democratic votes by running an independent candidate and frequent legal complaints against Democratic candidates alleging election and campaign finance violations.

Noe also used a public affairs television program, "Upfront Toledo," to attack Democrats, as well as looking for ways to create infighting among Democrats.

"It was our strategy to endorse Democrats for the purpose of sowing divisions within the Democratic Party," Noe said in the lawsuit.

Merrill Samual Keiser, Jr. - Democrat
Mike DeWine - Republican
John Mitchel - Republican
William G. Pierce - Republican
David R. Smith - Republican

At least he's genuine.

Suggestion: Someone enter as a Republican candidate, hell bent on free pot, total restriction on arms and a secular US state based on Stalin's doctrine.

A) His views on homosexuality fall somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun. Even Pat "Screaming Yellow Bonkers" Robertson isn't even advocating gays be put to DEATH....(yet, anyway).

B) This guy apparently pulled a Rip Van Winkle and fell asleep back when Republicans were progressive and Democrats were represented by Zell "Even More Bugfuck Crazy Than Pat Robertson" Miller. Has to be the only explanation why he's registered Democrat. Either that or he was shit-faced drunk when he registered...

......The Fremont man is causing some controversy with one of his beliefs. He tells News 11 homosexuality should be a felony, punishable by death. "Just like we have laws against murder, we have laws against stealing, we have laws against taking drugs -- we should have laws against immoral conduct," Keiser says.

Keiser has no political background. He says the only reason he's running as a Democrat is because that's how he was registered the last time he voted.

Keiser will face Democrat Sherrod Brown in the May primary.

21. This could be a trick. Remember what the Repubs did to Cynthia McKinney.
They unseated her in a primary by having a massive Republican switch over to vote for her opponent. If they are planning on doing this to defeat Brown in the Democratic primary, there could be problems. Is the Republican outcone pretty much assured? I do not know. If so, the Repubs might feel safe to switchy over and screw the dem primary results. If that is the case, then the earlier suggestion of running a pro por, anti-Nafta candidate in the Republican party might just be good insurance.

"Is the Republican outcone pretty much assured?"

For Senate, yeah. DeWhine has it locked.

Governor is a different matter, and in Ohio you can only vote in one party's primary. There's a nasty fight brewing between Petro and Blackwell.

I'm tempted to register Republican just to vote for Petro. Strickland and Brown have it locked for us, and more dirt is coming out on Petro. I think Strickland would beat him despite his Cuyahoga County ties. Blackwell's dangerous....but he'd be almost certain to win.

With less attention and lower turnout, a primary would be easier to fix.
Then DeWine would be a shoo-in in November.

36. can republicans vote in democratic primaries in ohio...?
if so, the Dems could find themselves in an embarrassing situation.

here in illinois, a few election cycles back, a stealth larouchie with a common sounding name ended up winning the primary for lieutenant gov., and ended up on the ticket w/ adlai stevenson- pretty much derailing any chance he might have had against...i think it was...jim edgar(?- does anyone from IL remember...?)

45. Yep, GOPers can vote in DEM primary in Ohio....
All they have to do is declare themselves a Dem when they show up to vote on primary day. That'll keep them from voting in the GOP primary the same day, though. If there's a clear leader on the GOP side, some GOPers might be willing to switch for a day.

37. Strange Bird but no worry (at least yet)
Strange man, perhaps even evil but his idea is just to get attention. The Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas held that the Constitution's guarantee of privacy extended to consensual homosexual conduct, regardless of the moral charaterization of such conduct in society. So I wouldn't get too worried about this guy, yet. When they start proposing Constitutional Amendments to outlaw homosexuality, homosexual conduct, etc. then we will have our work cut out for ourselves. But even then, I don't think they could muster the necessary state approvals to pass it since overwhelmingly most Americans are not hostile to gay Americans right to exist, or even be treated fairly in employment, etc. They do seem hell bent on protecting marriage. What marriage needs protecting from is of course not the homosexuals but the heterosexuals themselves who debase it with turnstyle divorce, spousal abuse, child abuse, etc.

Maybe do a side by side tally:

Ohio

I'll sign for almost anyone to get on the ballot. I think people should run if they want to. If they aren't worthy of election, they won't be elected. (That's a pre selection 2000 mentality.)

I must admit that I would not sign for someone to get on the ballot if he was advocating a law to execute gays. However, I sign for people I know nothing about.

In other words, 1,144 signatures to place him on the ballot do not necessarily represent 1,144 signatures that agree with him in any way.

in both parties as agitation by the Bush Administration and limitless funding from corporate America encourage Abrahamic fundamentalists -- Christian and Islamic alike -- to reveal their true (infinitely murderous) values and true (endlessly sadistic) selves.

The Abrahamic fundamentalist threat to liberty is the most malevolent threat in human history, promising a new Dark Age literally without end, and most Americans -- including most mainstream American churches -- are already too oppressed to acknowledge the magnitude of the danger.

I've never been one for blanket statements about homophobia and society, etc.

But the comments I keep reading from people--citizens, preachers, politicians, Academy members--who will mouth off about their repulsion towards gay people at the drop of a hat is truly staggering to me.

I was watching the news at the bank while waiting for someone, and between the "Crash" clips, the Supreme decision on military recruiters, the abortion decision in the Midwest, and a solidier who lost both legs in Iraq whom Bush was drooling over as "an inspiration," I almost started crying right there in the lobby.

It's all too much.

68. Yes Yes Yes
Thank you.

However, sadly, there are a lot of people who feel the homophobia card is being played when in fact it is still okay in this society to speak out against gay people.

There's no question in my mind that there are politicians who don't like black people and think they should live in their ghettos and leave white people alone.

They may think that, but they would never get away with stating that belief during a campaign.

On the other hand, it's okay to state that gay people deserve the dealth penalty for crissakes and where is the outrage?

I didn't even know about this until now.

In contrast to all my fellow progressive friends. They think I'm off base here to worry about being arrested for being gay. Well, guess what? The jews thought that after their enormous contribution in WWI to helping their German homeland, even in defeat, that they were "safe" too. Then they got blamed for that loss and it snowballed. I'm not paranoid, just an avid reader of history.

I'm not sure if this is true, but given that in Fascist England minority groups, racial and sexual, are being rounded up and put in camps, it would add an interesting dynamic to the story (he is not just fighting for the freedom of the British people, but for his own survival as a human being as well).

124. Thanks. That was 10 years ago. Seems he and Nickles
were avant garde.

"...You can be assured that same-sex marriage is an issue that has arrived worldwide and that efforts to head it off will only be successful in the short term.

...Therefore, Mr. President, the time is now, the place is here, to debate this issue. It confronts us now. It comes even nearer.

There are those who say, "Why does the Senate not debate and act upon relevant matters?" This is relevant. And it is relevant today...

The above was said in 1996. Who knew? I guess they didn't have so may vociferous backers then.

Also, I didn't know about his remark about atheists.

I actually know very little about Byrd, except that he gave an excellent anti-war speech. I also know that he was a former Klan member.

Thanks for providing the information. I'm on dial up, and didn't want to go looking all over the internet slowly.

123. My fear is...
...people angry about the Hackett/Brown dust up will be too ticked at Brown to vote for him, so they'll just go with the other Democrat on the ticket (i.e. Keiser) -- not having a clue who this guy is. Some people are complaining about this Keiser guy getting attention, and having it connected to Ohio, but I think the more people know about who and what he is, the better. I'd hate to get him elected simply because nobody knows he's gone off the deep end.

126. This works if Blackwell's way out in front come primary time
It's very obvious to me that the whole intent of this is to put Mike DeWine in the Senate. Who's engineering this? Blackwell, and probably the White House.

It's a simple three-prong strategy:

Prong 1: Pick someone shithouse rats call crazy. Done.
Prong 2: Get thousands and thousands of Republicans to declare Democrat on primary day so they can vote for this man.
Prong 3: Start calling realtors in the DC area on behalf of Mike DeWine because the number of people who think like Merrill Keiser does is not high enough to put anyone in office. Especially since he's running as a Democrat.

The only big problem here is, what happens if Jim Petro looks like he might win the primary? ESPECIALLY if there's a danger that a critical mass of Democrats will declare Republican on primary day to vote for Petro?

I have long declared that there's a point past which you can't BBV an election without getting caught. It's probably around five percent. If Petro's got a seven- or eight-point lead going into primary day, Merrill Keiser will not be on the Democratic ballot.
