Peace activist Sheehan arrested in NY protest 12 minutes ago

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cindy Sheehan, the anti-war activist whose son was killed in the Iraq war, was arrested with three other protesters in New York on Monday after a rally with women from Iraq.

Sheehan became a central figure in the U.S. anti-war movement last summer after she camped outside President George W. Bush's Texas ranch and has been arrested at least two other times at protests.

On Monday, she had joined a delegation of women from Iraq at the rally at the United Nations, urging the United Nations to help prevent civil war in Iraq.

About 20 protesters went to the U.S. mission to the United Nations to deliver a petition with 60,000 signatures seeking an end to the war. Nobody from the mission received them so Sheehan and three other American women sat down in front of the building, refused to leave, and were arrested.

A police spokesman said they were expected to be released later on Monday.

55. She doesn't do it for her "15 minutes". She does it because she
cares enough to endure.

She endures people that have no clue what a sacrifice like hers demands, physically and emotionally.

She endures in the face of her sorrow at the loss of her own son trying to keep other's children from dying for the lies and profits of evil old men.

She endures people calling her terrible names on national television.

She endures the embarrassment of having her personal life twisted and spread out like common small town gossip.

Would you endure that crap just to have 15 minutes of fame? I sure as hell would not!

She's just an everyday lady trying to do the right thing.

I have only deep and abiding respect and admiration for anyone that can endure the shit she has been shoveled in this country.:patriot:

37. Norman Morrison (ca. 1965) was crucified for all of us
when he immolated himself outside McNamara's office to protest the Vietnam War.

If you read Vietnamese people's recollections of the times (in, for example, "Patriots"), you will see that Norman Morrison had a huge impact on the mind-set of Vietnamese people. Ho Chi Minh actually gave a speech where he alluded to Morrison to illustrate the distinction between the American people and the policies of the American government.

56. I feel very sorry for her, but...

Couldn't her energy be spent better giving speeches, helping get people elected that can stop the madness in Iraq. The only chance of stopping this war is to change who is in power. I may have been rude with my "15 comment" but lets get real only by educating those swing voters in the middle and maybe pulling a few righties to the left is what is going to change who is in power. Being continually arrested for protesting comes off to the Joe and Jan Sixpacks of the world that she is starving for attention and as many refer to her as "just another liberal hippy wacko" As righties pull harder right and lefties pull further left Joe and Jane either vote for who ever spouts off the best bullshit in Oct/Nov or becomes disillusioned with politics and turns a blind eye.

I didn't mean to sound like a prick, really I didn't, but Cindy Sheehan could be arrested in DC every day for the next year and it is not going to make a bit of difference. And for the record I have done my best to educate friends and families members who were life long Republicans about the true nature of the Bush administration via this site and F911 and my efforts were rewarded when they voted Democratic in 2004

in our name in Iraq, Afghanistan, and soon Iran. The civilians and the soldiers whose lives are being mangled for what? Maybe dramatic is how it feels to be blown-up or tortured or manipulated by these greedy SOB's. 8. Nothing is even going to have a chance at changing
in this country until thousands of us are willing to go to jail to defend and fight for our freedoms. So far it's just Cindy. Yeah, I'm scared shitless, I have kids, I don't want to go to jail. I also don't want to be the only one out there. Where is everyone? But it's not going to change writing another letter to your "representive" or voting in a poll or petition or all the other useless crap that I've done. That much I've become convinced of. And how long ago was Vietnam? How stupid are Americans? Really? How long was Watergate? Do we learn anything? Really? That's what I really believe and I know it's offensive but I'm just stunned at this country. How many more dead? How many more wars to make the corporations and the military rich instead of us? How many America? When we become like the former USSR and no longer have ANY money for social services but only money to fund wars that are based on??????? I'm still waiting for the explanation why people need to die in Iraq or what the hell died for in Vietnam.

The media just doesn't cover it.

Last September, 400 of us got arrested at the White House for refusing to leave the sidewalk. Cindy ended up participating, but she wasn't part of the organizing of that event. But the ONLY reason we got media coverage was because she was there.

You are certainly right that we need more people willing to cross these lines, but there are a lot of sisters and brothers in peace putting their asses on the line all over the country. There are many nonviolent disobedience groups around the country staging events all the time, and a lot coming up this month in honor of the 3rd anniversary of the Iraq war. We just need the media to cover it!

Peace!

19. Here she looks sad ~
?

I hope these demonstrations grow, with tens of thousands of women from here and around the world ~ Iraqi mothers, Afghani mothers, American mothers who've lost their beloved children, husbands and brothers as a result of the lies and the corruption of this administration.

I can't imagine their pain ~ I hadn't heard about this demonstration ~ these women are so brave ~ and each time they arrest them, they only gather more support. No decent person can look at this after hearing all the propaganda about 'we support the troops' and not be sickened that after losing her son to 'preserve our freedoms' a mother cannot attend the SOTU adress or deliver a letter without being arrested ~ what a disgrace this is!

If Bush was a real leader, he would would his executive powers to stop this. That might even get him some support ~ but what am I thinking ~ he's not even a real human being ~

39. I am bothered by her laughing when she gets arrested
I don't find it funny, and as I said on another thread, I respect her tremendously, but I think her laughing allows those who wish her harm to portray her as not being serious about this, or just being a publicity hound. I know that is not in her control, but I think I would have a somber look on my face as they dragged me away, or at least be yelling or appalled. I wish she would not look so smiley - it creates a disturbing picture.

JMHO. I like and respect Mrs. Sheehan tremendously.

69. Agreed. It always looks like she's ENJOYING
getting arrested.

I think she is a brave woman, and I am very sorry for her loss. I am so proud of her for standing up to B*** and his failed policies, for sacrificing her freedom for this cause. However, I believe these grins while being arrested cause significant damage to her mission.

Her child was killed, and dozens more die every day. One would think that her outrage and sadness over this would not result in smiles for the cameras when she is arrested for protesting. It's really troubling to see her smiling and laughing in almost every photo of her various arrests. I've seen several photos of this arrest (and of others, too), and it looks like she's being dragged, pushed, and treated badly. At first, I wondered if she just had a weird grimace that could be interpreted as a smile... but there's no doubt to me now. Perhaps she is glad for the attention it brings to the cause, but I truly believe it is counterproductive. It makes the event of getting arrested seem like a triumph, and it distracts from the event that brought her to be an activist.

74. Spend some time reading up on various reports. I don't think
Cindy is smiling, nor enjoying one moment of this, nor is Medea or anyone else being arrested having "FUN"!.

Have you ever been arrested? Do you have any idea of what it is like inside, once arrested or even detained or in the process of being detained?

I think possibly not.

No one I know has ever relished the prospect or "enjoyed" the g--d----- experience. It can be pretty damned grim!!

I think I'll end it here before I launch into a full fledged rant.

By the way, welcome to DU.

Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 05:33 PM by land of the free
my point is that there are countless pictures of her with what appears to be a smile on her face while she is being arrested at various events. Of course I don't think she's happy about it.
I think you missed my point entirely.

She is obviously being dragged & manhandled in the two pictures I saw of this latest arrest. One picture has her being dragged on the ground. The other has her being dragged & shoved while standing, with her shirt & jacket lifted up and her belly exposed. They are obviously not treating a peaceful protester nicely. However, in both photos she has what appears to be a big grin on her face.

I can recall several other arrests where she was smiling as she was being led away. At first, I thought it was a nervous smile. But either way, the smile is a problem.

I am certain she isn't enjoying being roughed around. However, when she has a big grin on her face while she's being hauled away, it makes it appear as if she is happy to be arrested. It makes it look as if this is her goal. When you add to this the fact that many in the media add to the myth that she's just looking for celebrity (notice the quote by Richard Grenell, the spokesman for the U.S. Mission, in today's article, about how she supposedly was invited in to talk, but instead layed down in front of the door, and he called it a "media stunt"... who knows if that is bull****, but it was stated as fact).

My point is that the grin ends up being the story - not Casey, and not the others who are dying every day.

I'm not making light of how they treat her.

Peace activist Sheehan arrested in NY protest

NEW YORK (Reuters) - snip

On Monday, she had joined a delegation of women from Iraq at the rally at the United Nations, urging the United Nations to help prevent civil war in Iraq.

About 20 protesters went to the U.S. mission to the United Nations to deliver a petition with 60,000 signatures seeking an end to the war. Nobody from the mission received them so Sheehan and three other American women sat down in front of the building, refused to leave, and were arrested.

A police spokesman said they were expected to be released later on Monday.

The Iraqi women plan to deliver a petition to the White House on Wednesday. Earlier they held a news conference at U.N. headquarters calling for the United States to withdraw its forces. Entisar Mohammad Ariabi, a pharmacist at Baghdad's Yarmook Teaching Hospital, wept as she told reporters of the hardships experienced by Iraqi women. "U.S. occupation has destroyed our country, made it into a prison," she said. "Schools are bombed, hospitals are bombed."

"We thank you, Mr. Bush, for liberating our country from Saddam. But now, go out! Please go out!" she said.

...SHOULD deliver copies of THE LETTER to the UN.

The Democratic Party is a BIG TENT, but there is NO ROOM for those
who advance the agenda of THE RICH (Corporate Owners) at the EXPENSE of LABOR and the POOR.

51. This reminds me of the Davies Hall demonstration last Feb(?)
The press had photos, too, but again failed to identify the activist as Medea.

Can someone search the California & GEN forums, the posts should still be there (I don't have a star anymore).

thanks

40. What the hell happened to the U.S. using DIPLOMATS for diplomatic...
...positions? This is from the AP:

...Women Say No to War, which helped organize the march, said Sheehan and three other women were arrested while trying to deliver a 60,000-signature petition to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations urging the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

Ann Wright, a former Army colonel and U.S. diplomat, said in a group statement that the U.S. Mission, representing the United Nations' U.S. delegation, refused to send a representative to meet with the delegation and the women refused to leave without delivering the petition...."

First we get Bolton, probably the least diplomatic "ambassador" ever, and now we see former military officers are working as "diplomats" for the U.S.,
:wtf:

61. Ann Wright was one of the protestors w/ Sheehan & CodePink delivering the
letter to the UN Mission....

You were assuming she was part of the UN?

Ann Wright, (FYI) has been very outspoken against this administration. She worked for the US State Dept for a couple of decades if I recall correctly and has a lot of experience with the State Dept. She's one of the "good guys"...

52. Sleinte, Ms. Sheehan
What I admire about Ms. Sheehan is that she has not and will not fade because the MSM long ago decided her '15 minutes of fame' are up. She is a leader now in the progressive movement, and knows she is in for the long haul. What the corporate fascist media whore swine think is irrelevant. She won't stop. She is following her heart, her sense of the truth, the clear light deep within her.

I am with those who posted here to send there love to Cindy. She is on the path of Ghandi, and King, living alongside the ideals of Jesus, and RFK. I find her writings clear and fine, and her spirit great, good. She's funny, she's serious, she's all sorts of things. We are lucky to have her. I hope in a coming, soon day, she will be publicly thanked by new leaders who wrest back the government from its current crime family bearers.

For a long time I did not see heroes in the progressive movement who were not long dead. I see them now, emerging in all sorts of ways. Sheehan, Murtha, Hackett, Rhodes, Feingold. There are others. Not everyone will agree on who is a 'hero' and who isn't but I think it hopeful that we have some again, brave souls, who will inspire bravery in others, as heroes do :)

66. Here's a thought.
I often see Cindy Sheheen threads just like this one turn into Cindy's D\Great vs. Cindy's a Problem.

Here's the way I se it.

Cindy Sheheen doesn't give a shit what you or I think about her. She's not doing what she's doing for us.

And I like that about her.

68. She WANTED to be arrested -
- had she not wanted to be arrested she could have easily stood up and moved aside. She intentionally blocked the entrance so that they WOULD arrest her. The AP reports the following:

"Richard Grenell, the spokesman for the U.S. Mission, said in response to Sheehan's arrest: "We invited her in to discuss her concerns with a U.S. Mission employee. She chose not to come in but to lay down in front of the building and block the entrance. It was clearly designed to be a media stunt, not aimed at rational discussion," Grenell said."

We all need to emulate Cindy and take a stand on this war
through civil resistance. It's the only way left to us
now- There isn't much time left before the fascist Bush
administration completely takes what little we have left.

Ann, Medea and you and all the rest. CO is truly all that is left to us. I'd love to support longshoremen and truckers in a nationwide shutdown.
(translates to no beer for the weekend for sports fans and festival go'ers, lack of groceries on shelves, bottled water, gas lines...... the list just goes on and on and on. Then and only then will there be action)

We agree with you, there really isn't much time left if any at all.

Peace,
Citrene

82. she looks childish
I think she's become somewhat clown-like. It's too bad she can't do something more useful with her time and energy than to travel the country protesting and racking up a bunch of civil disobedience charges. She's become fodder for local news programs and right-wing talk show fanatics.

I wonder how much she's being manipulated by others who want to use her notoriety to their advantage - or maybe she's doing all of this on her own, in which case, I'm even more distraught by her antics.

whatever cindy sheehan is doing, she's doing it because her son bled when men in suits lied.
she may be a clown to you, but to me she's doing the right thing. if someone got my son killed by mis-using the power given to them in good faith, i'd do the same too. and would i care if people thought i was a clown, or that somebody was using me for their own ends? frankly dude, i wouldn't give a fuck.

84. You Sound Childish
Cindy is clown like? She needs to spend her time doing something more useful? Someone other than Cindy wants to use her notoriety to their advantage? How fucking old are you BTW? My four year old has a better understanding of this situation than you.

I'm so glad Cindy thinks more of Casey than of upsetting people who have NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT SHE IS DEALING WITH. My son nearly died in that shit hole called Ramadi last October. He is a physical and mental mess. On February 25 he lost his best friends, two of his best fucking friends, in that shit hole called Ramadi and he is going to two fucking funerals in two weeks.

I have been out of my mind worrying, crying, hurting, raging, over what Ben has gone through....AND HE IS FUCKING ALIVE. CASEY IS DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. FOR A FUCKING IMMORAL ILLEGAL MIDDLE EASTERN POWER GRAB. A FUCKING LIE! How dare you say such shitty and ignorant things about Cindy. How fucking dare you.
